Sometimes I struggle to think of really clever, attention grabbing captions for posts… so this time I kept it simple!

Didn’t work today… here’s why:

My partner and I have recently started a community magazine for the village we live in (Porthleven). We’ve been blown away by the response it’s had after only one issue! BBC Radio Cornwall got wind of its success and asked me to come in to chat over it. So yeah, that’s why I wasn’t working today!

Don’t worry, I definitely gave Stratum a big space for an advert 😉.

Just re-noticed this piece of artwork…

What I mean by that is we have SO MUCH modern marquetry work on our walls that I don’t notice it anymore. But today this one caught my eye and I thought I’d share it with you. Propped nicely against our blue garage door!

This is of course made from reclaimed and recycled materials. If you look closely you can see a strip of Zinc ❤️

A panel we made a long while ago. Mixed timber laminated to a plywood substrate, with hidden (or not so hidden) Modern Marquetry stripe through the centre.

Oooooh yeah I like it when our marquetry is quietly subtle when it’s mixed with similar timber tones!

For basically all of our Modern Marquetry making lives, we’ve used plywood as our substrate (the stable, solid surface we bond our Marquetry material to).

But we’ve been playing about recently, making tests with card, paper and even cloth like this. If we produce thin enough Marquetry, we can then make curved surfaces and objects.

There’s actually more to these tests, but we can’t let the cat out the bag just yet!

Open open close close.

A quick run around showing you the ‘inners’ and ‘outers’ of this glorious wardrobe we made a few years back for our client in Penzance, Cornwall. And yes… that’s right, you spotted those solid ash drawer fronts with stripes of Modern Marquetry… niiiiice.

The moment after the colours popped!

When we oil our surfaces, the tones of reclaimed timbers and colours of recycled plastics pop and get brought to life. These are the doors we made for the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter… the materials used came from the museums waste pile!
