🥒🌱 Growing Cucumbers Outdoors! 🌱🥒

This year I’ve found that growing cucumbers directly in the ground has been much more productive than growing them in the greenhouse!

All of these cucumbers have come from just one plant, and it’s still producing! 😍🥒

It’s amazing what you can grow with a little space and some patience.

Does anyone else find their cucumbers grow better outdoors than in a greenhouse? 🌿

🐝🌧️ A Rainy Morning at the Hive! 🌧️🐝

Even with the rain coming down this morning, some of our bees are still hanging around outside the hive entrance!

It got me wondering — why wouldn’t they just head inside where it’s warm and dry? 🤔🐝

Is this normal behaviour, especially as we head towards winter?

Any experienced beekeepers have an explanation? Always looking to learn more about these fascinating little creatures! 💛

🐝🍯 Our First Honey! 🍯🐝

Last month we reached another exciting milestone at Meadowtail Farm — we extracted our first small amount of honey!

We shared it with friends and family as little samples, and it was amazing to finally taste what our bees have been busy producing. 🐝💛

It may have been a small harvest, but it’s another big step towards our Meadowtail Farm dream. 🌱

🥒 Cucamelon size comparison! 🥒

We’ve had quite a range of sizes from our cucamelon plants this year! We lined a few up next to a £1 coin to show the difference. 😄

It got us wondering — what is the average size a cucamelon should grow to? Are some of these getting a little too big, or do you let yours grow this size before picking them?

Would love to see what everyone else is growing! 🌱

🍅 Tomato advice needed! 🍅

Sadly, one of our tomato plants has fallen over and the main stem has broken off. 😢

There are still plenty of tomatoes on it at different stages of ripening, so I’m wondering — will they continue to ripen if I leave them attached to the broken stalk, or would I be better taking them all off and ripening them indoors?

What would you do? Any tips welcome! 🍅🌱

🐝 A little beekeeping question!

We’ve noticed a few bees underneath the hive, on the outside of the mesh floor, and they seem to be hanging around underneath while the rest of the colony is above.

Are these bees simply getting a little confused and trying to find their way back into the hive, or is there another reason they gather underneath the mesh?

Would be great to hear from any experienced beekeepers who have seen this before. 🐝🍯

🌶️ Getting the peppers ready for winter! 🌱❄️

We’ve got these pepper plants growing in the ground in a fairly sheltered spot, and they’ve done really well this year.

With the colder weather and first frosts not too far away, I’m wondering what would be best for them. 🤔

Would you dig them up and overwinter them somewhere protected, or could I build a cold-frame/mini greenhouse around them and leave them where they are?

Has anyone successfully overwintered pepper plants outdoors in the UK, particularly around Hertfordshire? I’d love to hear what worked for you! 🌶️🌱

🌱 Looking to learn from a local farm or smallholding! 🐝🐓🌿

I’m looking to visit a local farm or smallholding around the Hemel Hempstead area to learn more about what it really takes to make the next step towards our dream of owning and running our own smallholding.
