Two days of cutting in the rain. The field is tired and so am I, but these cheered me right up when I got them home and lined them up on the doorstep.

The achillea, oh how I’ve missed it. It struggled badly in this summer’s heat, so it was a joy to pick a few stems for this order.

Probably the last of the zinnias, cosmos and dahlias for the year. They’re tucked away in the basement now, ready for collection tomorrow. The season has truly turned.

It’s going to be cold tonight, and the wind and rain of the last few days are all conspiring to finish off the dahlias. I’m heading out to cut the last of them, but before I do, here are a few more of these magical shape shifters.

Labyrinth, Salmon Runner and Jowey Winnie, slipping between hot pink and soft peach, each one picking up the colours of the others.

Shape shifters.

Flowers that never quite settle on one colour. Pink drifting into apricot, an ombre in every bloom.

These in-between shades are the ones I’m drawn to most, sitting somewhere between soft pastel and something more muted. On their own they’re beautiful. In a mix, they’re the link that brings everything into harmony.

Here, it’s Sweet Maria and Labyrinth doing the shifting. It’s the last few weeks of cutting now, so I’m savouring every stem.

Waiting for new tyres on the van, dirty chai in hand, and I’ve ended up scrolling back through this year’s dahlia buckets.

You have to be a little obsessive to be a grower. There are still flowers in the field and I’m already thinking about next summer: what stays, what goes, what deserves a spot. Tuber emails and availability lists have started landing in my inbox, but I’m not buying yet. For now, I’m enjoying looking back at the ones that made this season.

Chrysanthemums and I have an uneasy relationship.

The early work they need, from cuttings to potting on, always arrives just as the dahlias are taking all my attention. Add to that a wet, windy Warwickshire site without a pest-free polytunnel, and they were never going to be my autumn mainstay.

If I’m honest, I’ve also carried a lingering feeling that they’re slightly old-fashioned.

And yet, a handful of varieties have won me round. The garden chrysanthemums I planted in my first season on the flower farm didn’t take to the cold, sodden ground, and I’m still weighing up whether lifting and storing them each winter is worth the effort.

The heirloom varieties I really hanker after, grown by American growers, seem impossible to find over here.

So this year they spent the summer in pots, ready to move under cover, and a bit later than planned they’re now in the poly. Here’s hoping the rest of the field rallies, so there’s something lovely to offer alongside them when they open.

Are you a chrysanthemum fan, or still waiting to be convinced?

Still cutting. Every year throws something different at you as a British flower grower.

I’ve had frost finish things off by mid-September before, so these late weeks of dahlias and cosmos feel like a little bonus.

White has always been a classic, and the field is still giving.

Part of me wants it to go on and on. The other part is looking at a mind-boggling list of jobs that all need doing before the weather turns: beds to clear, dahlia tubers to lift, and next year to plan somehow.

For now, I’m enjoying every last stem.

This has been the most requested colour palette of the summer.

The orange dahlias have been a little slow off the mark, but the zinnias have more than made up for it. I love them a little more each time I grow them. The Queen Lime mix has been a constant, though I think my heart now belongs to Zinderella Peach.

Note to self: more orange and burgundy dahlias on the list for next year.
