Happy National Hug Your Cat Day! 🐾😻

If you own a cat, you already know who actually rules the house.

We know cats have a special relationship with carpets - whether they are sunbathing in that one warm spot, doing that weird "kneading" thing on the stairs, or... unfortunately using the hallway carpet as a scratching post. 🫣

Give your feline friend an extra big hug today (won their terms, of course) and pop a picture of your cat in the comments! We want to see who runs your household! 👇

Settling a great debate once and for all...

When you walk into your house (or someone else’s), what is your immediate rule?

1️⃣ Shoes ON - Come on in, don’t worry about it!

2️⃣ Shoes OFF - Absolute dealbreaker, they stay by the front door.

As flooring experts, we see the aftermath of both sides of the debate every single day.

Cast your vote in the comments. Let’s see which team wins! 👇

Most people don't think about their flooring when the temperatures climb, but heat and sunlight can actually do more damage than you'd expect. A few things worth knowing:

🪟 Direct sunlight fades carpet and LVT faster than you think. If you've got south-facing rooms, a good blind or UV film on the windows goes a long way.

🌡️ Solid wood and laminate expands in the heat. It needs room to breathe - which is exactly why those expansion gaps exist. Don't block them with furniture or beading.

💧 Humidity is the sneaky one. Hot, damp air causes more movement in timber floors than the heat alone. Keep rooms ventilated where you can.

🧹 Summer = more foot traffic, more dust, more grit. Grit tracked in on shoes is one of the biggest causes of carpet wear - a good doormat is genuinely one of the best investments you can make.

Your floors work hard all year round. A little extra care in the summer means they'll still be looking great come autumn. 🍂

📚 It's Hay Festival time!

For 10 days every year, this little corner of Wales becomes one of the most visited places in the country. Thousands of people descend on Hay-on-Wye for the talks, the atmosphere, and sometimes just the experience of being here.

But, beyond the big names on the stage, what makes Hay Festival special is what's already here. The independent bookshops. The cafés. The local makers and traders. The small businesses that keep this town what it is 365 days a year - not just during festival season.

If you're visiting, please shop local. Grab your coffee from an independent. Browse the bookshops. Pick up something handmade. It makes a genuine difference to real people in this community.

If you're a local business gearing up for the influx, we're rooting for every single one of you.

📐 Why the shape of your room matters more than you'd think

Choosing flooring isn't just about colour and texture - the size and layout of a room should influence your decision just as much. Here's why 👇

Pattern repeats in awkward spaces - A large pattern repeat looks stunning in a big open room. In a narrow hallway or small bedroom? You might only ever see half the pattern, and waste a significant amount of material matching it up. Always factor repeat into your cost calculations.

Pile direction in long rooms - In a hallway or open plan space, the direction the pile runs affects how the colour reads from different angles. A good fitter plans this deliberately - it's not something to decide on the day.

Seam placement - In larger rooms, carpet almost always needs to be seamed. Poor seam planning is one of the most common causes of a carpet looking tired before its time.

Subfloor quirks - Older properties especially have floors that aren't square, have awkward alcoves, or chimney breast recesses that add complexity to any installation. Experience means knowing how to plan and cut around these without compromising the finish.

The room tells you a lot about what it needs, if you know how to listen to it.

LVT or carpet - which room gets which?

There's no single right answer. But there is a right answer for each room. Here's how to think about it 👇

Living room - Carpet wins for comfort and warmth, especially in cooler months. LVT works brilliantly too if you have pets or young children and need something easier to clean. Lifestyle first, aesthetics second.

Bedroom - Carpet, almost every time. Soft underfoot first thing in the morning, warmer, quieter. A dense, mid-pile in a neutral is hard to beat.

Hallway & stairs - High traffic, lots of dirt coming in from outside. A dense carpet or LVT with a realistic stone or wood effect both perform well here. Avoid anything too light or textured.

Kitchen - LVT every time. Water resistant, easy to clean, and modern LVT looks genuinely stunning in a kitchen. Some wood and stone effects are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing.

Bathroom - LVT again. Warm underfoot, water resistant, and far easier to maintain than ceramic tiles with grout lines that need scrubbing.

Home office - Often overlooked! A good quality carpet reduces noise and feels better for long hours at a desk. LVT works well too if the room doubles as something else.

The right flooring is out there for every room. Sometimes it just takes a conversation to figure out what that is. 💬

How long should your carpet actually last?

A lot longer than most people think - if it's fitted and looked after properly.

Here's what affects lifespan:

🧵 Fibre type - Wool is naturally resilient and bounces back under pressure. Polypropylene is hardwearing and stain resistant. Nylon sits somewhere in between - tough, versatile and great for busy households. The fibre you choose should match how the room is actually used.

📐 Pile density - This is the big one. A densely packed pile holds its shape under foot traffic far better than a looser, thicker one. Don't be fooled by how plush something feels in a showroom - check the density rating, not just the depth.

🔨 How it was fitted - A carpet that hasn't been properly stretched will start to ripple and lift within a few years. A poorly prepped subfloor causes uneven wear. The fit matters as much as the carpet itself.

🧹 How it's maintained - Regular vacuuming (with the right setting for the pile), prompt attention to spills, and avoiding over-wetting during cleaning all make a significant difference.

A quality carpet, properly fitted and well maintained, should last 10–15 years in a living room and 7–10 in a hallway.

Most people choose a floor based on the color and the feel. But as fitters, we know that the most important part of your new floor is the part you’ll never see. 🛠️

When we pull up an old carpet or laminate, we aren't just looking at the waste, we’re looking at what's left behind by the last person to touch it.

A poor fitting job usually hides three things:

1️⃣ Neglected Sub-floors: Laying expensive new flooring over uneven, un-prepped concrete or floorboards. It might look okay for a week, but it will eventually lead to creaks, cracks, and premature wear.

2️⃣ Crumbling Underlay: Re-using old underlay to "save costs." It’s like putting a brand-new engine in a rusty car - it won't provide the bounce or thermal insulation you’re paying for.

3️⃣ Lazy Edging: If the grippers aren't replaced or the tucking isn't precise, your floor will eventually "creep" and bubble.

At Sullivan's, we don’t just cover up your old floor. We inspect the foundation, prep the sub-floor, and ensure the invisible layers are just as perfect as the top one.

A floor that’s fitted correctly from the bottom up doesn't just look better - it lasts years longer.

Is your current floor feeling "bouncy" or looking uneven? It might be time to see what’s going on underneath.

May the 4th be with you! Today, we’re choosing sides... ⚔️

In the world of flooring, choosing between the Light Side and the Dark Side can change the entire energy of your home:

☀️ The Light Side: Perfect for opening up narrow hallways and creating a sense of space. It’s the ultimate choice for showing off the texture of a high-quality weave or the natural grain of a plank.

🌑 The Dark Side: Unbeatable for creating a high-end, architectural feel. It’s a bold choice that hides the minor daily "battle scars" and foot traffic marks that lighter floors tend to highlight.

Which side are you on?
