We had a fairly uneventful journey home yesterday. Traffic wasn't too heavy. We detoured via Chesterfield to visit extended family, had a tour of a renovation being undertaken by one of them () and lunch at a farm shop close by.

I'm already missing the almost 360° visas of our 'counties for the week' and can't wait to go back.

In the meantime I'm back at Living Wheathampstead today and tomorrow and would love to see you there.

roadtrip day 10

We spent a lovely day yesterday just driving around and enjoying all the stunning panoramic views that are to be had in this wonderful area. We swapped from Co Durham to Yorkshire and back many times and at some point ventured into Northumberland and even Cumbria! We past several abandoned lead mines along the way that added their sad architecture to the landscape.

We stopped a lot just to look at the views; they were so breathtaking. We drove down into the little village of Allenheads which is red squirrel country and as Mr TLC parked the car one of the little beauties scampered across the road about 25 yds in front of us! A few minutes later it made the return trip. I've only seen them in the wild so to speak on TV before so this was so wonderful.

I didn't get a chance to get a photo as they are so speedy and, honestly, I was too busy just watching!

Today we are journeying home to a few loads of washing, work tomorrow for us both, but so many amazing memories of our ten days Up North!

Yesterday we went to Crook Hall Gardens for a look round. We had a lovely drive across the beloved moors first and then argued with Mrs SatNav on the best route to follow. She was very insistent but I trumped her ideas by using my phone satnav instead and that shut her up 🤣

Crook Hall Gardens is on the edge of Durham and necessitates lots of roundabouts, traffic lights and keep left/right lanes. We got there on the second attempt!

The gardens are built on some steep slopes and full of what, at the right time of year, would be an abundance of flowers. At this time of year they need a lot of dead heading to show off those still flowering. There are some really tall trees and some incredibly humongous tree trunks.

The Medieval hall is very atmospheric with a very tall ceiling with huge beams.

Mr TLC found a rather large toad in the garden so I was bidden to photograph Mr TLC with Mr Toad!🐸

Today is our last whole day here so we're just going for a drive round to see what we see.

Yesterday we travelled to see a seventh century Saxon Church and were so glad we made the effort to see it.  It's in a  circular graveyard surrounded by tall trees and is so very peaceful and quiet (no they are not the same thing).

The first thing you notice is the very high ceiling and that the original Saxon windows are quite small and very high up, presumably to stop the congregation gazing out during services!

I was saddened and also amazed at a board outside the churchyard telling the story of four brothers who's bravery in WW1 was rewarded, but mostly posthumously.  It must be a double edged sword for their families, feeling proud of their bravery, but mourning their loss.

The cross at the east end, now plastered over, is thought to predate the church, as is the sundial high up on the south wall. The frescos on the top of the archway are colourful.

For the rest I leave it to you Dear Reader to check out all the photos and imagine, if you can, the whole area surrounded by Saxons quietly going about their daily lives and worshipping in the church.

p.s. My voice came back yesterday and poor Mr TLC was subjected to my verbal diarrhea as I made up for lost time! He's two days behind me in the dreaded lurgy stakes so wasn't very appreciative of my cheerful chatter!
