🌼 ā€œPerfect Purplesā€ – Pressing Darker Flowers 2/5

Darker flowers behave really differently when you press them.

They tend to hold their colour better than lighter ones, but they can also dry much deeper than expected — sometimes losing a lot of their natural variation.

One thing that’s quite tricky with them is how they react once you start working with them again. Even though they’re fully dried, they’re still really sensitive.

As soon as you introduce glue, you’re also reintroducing a small amount of moisture back into the flower — and that can change the colour quite noticeably.

Even though I’m using the tiniest amount of glue, you can still see how delicate the process is and how much impact that small step can have.

You can see it here with the pink cosmos — parts of it have shifted more purple where the glue has interacted with the petal. It’s something you have to be really aware of, because once it happens, you can’t reverse it.

So it’s not just about pressing them well — it’s about how you handle them afterwards too.

Do you notice these colour changes, or is it something you’d only spot up close?

šŸ’œ ā€œPerfect Purplesā€ - Composition 1/5

I’ve been sharing more about what goes into each piece as part of my ā€œPetal Storiesā€ series ✨

This time I’m focusing on this one — a more purple/blue-toned piece — and I’ll be breaking it down over the next 5 posts.

This one feels quite different to my pastel work. I kept the palette much tighter, so it’s more about subtle differences in tone rather than lots of contrast.

The composition is still quite full, but I’ve been a bit more controlled with placement so everything feels balanced without competing too much.

Do you prefer a more limited colour palette like this, or something with more variety?

✨ ā€œPerfect Pastelsā€ - Process & Real Talk 5/5

This is the final post for ā€œPerfect Pastelsā€, next I’ll be talking about the ā€œPerfect Purplesā€ series.

This piece took waayyyyyy longer than I expected.

A big part of that is re-pressing — quite a few flowers didn’t come out right the first time, so they had to go back in. It’s a bit of a cycle, especially with more delicate ones.

Even once everything’s ready, it’s still really careful work. Adding glue can easily ruin a flower — too much, or in the wrong place, and it can stain or turn the petal translucent. Even worse - sometimes reintroducing moisture (from the glue), turns the flower brown, this is especially true when working with pastels and whites.

If that happens, you can’t just leave it… you have to (as gently as possible), remove the flower without damaging the surrounding flowers, and then find something to replace it with. It’s slow and a bit nerve-wracking at times. Luckily there’s no audio recordings that come with the compositions… it would be NSFW with all of the expletives 🤭

Then even when the piece looks ā€œfinishedā€, there’s still more to do. Every single petal has to be properly secured so nothing catches or chips when it’s being framed. After that, each flower is sealed with a protective varnish, and then the whole piece goes back into a large press to dry again after the gluing and sealing process. The bigger the piece of work, the longer it takes to re-dry the whole piece and let me tell you, it is absolutely NOT a fun wait.

There’s also the overall design to think about — choosing the flowers, keeping the palette balanced, making sure nothing feels too heavy in one area. It can feel a bit overwhelming in the middle of it all.

But once everything finally comes together, it’s (nearly) always worth it.

Do you prefer seeing this side of the process, or just the finished piece?

🌿 Post 4 – Texture & Detail ✨

There’s actually quite a lot going on in this one when you look closely.

I’ve used a mix of different textures, sizes, and types — from really delicate petals to slightly more structured flowers, and small leaves alongside the florals.

It’s about how all those elements sit together so nothing feels out of place. Even though everything is quite different, it still needs to feel balanced and work as one piece.

I try to make sure the texture and detail flow symbiotically, so your eye moves naturally across it rather than stopping in one spot.

What’s your favourite part — the bigger flowers, the tiny details, or the leaves?

The pressing process

Pastel flowers are honestly some of the hardest to work with šŸ˜…

About 80% of the light/white flowers I press don’t end up being usable, which means most of what I dry never actually makes it into a piece.

It mainly comes down to pigment — these flowers have so little colour in them to begin with, so they mark easily, fade, or go a bit translucent during pressing.

So even though they look soft and simple, they’re actually some of the most time-consuming to get right.

Definitely not as easy as they look.

Have you ever tried pressing flowers before?

ā€œPerfect Pastelsā€ composition & Design

This one came together quite naturally — I didn’t fully plan it, I just started placing flowers and built it up from there. I knew I wanted to use a pastel palette and keep the tones warm and inviting.

I like filling the whole space so there aren’t any big gaps, and then mixing smaller flowers in between the bigger ones so it doesn’t feel too heavy in one area.

It’s one of those pieces where you can keep looking and spot different little details each time.

What part do you notice first?

I realised I don’t often properly talk through each piece… so I’m changing that.

Introducing ā€œPetal Storiesā€ ✨

A little series where I’ll be sharing more of what goes into each piece — from how I build the composition, to colour choices, to the not-so-glam side of pressing (there’s a lot of trial and error behind the scenes).

Starting with this one šŸ¤

If there’s anything you’ve ever wanted to know about pressed flower art, ask away and I’ll include it as I go.

This one’s a bit of a colour journey 🌈

I didn’t set out with a strict plan for this piece—I just started gathering flowers and letting the colours lead the way. It slowly turned into this soft gradient, moving from deeper purples and pinks through to warm reds, and down into those golden yellows at the bottom.

Every flower has been pressed and placed by hand, and I love how each section has its own little mood while still flowing together as one piece.

It feels like a whole season captured in a single frame.

Do you see it as a gradient or more of a wild mix? 🌸

This one’s all about the purples… and clearly I couldn’t stop once I started šŸ˜…

From the soft lilacs to the deep, almost inky violets, I’ve layered in as many tones as I could find. Every flower has been picked and pressed by hand, then slowly arranged until it felt just right (and yes, that did involve moving things around a hundred times).

I love how rich and moody this piece feels compared to some of my others—still delicate, but with a bit more depth and drama.

Do you prefer the softer pastels or these deeper tones? šŸ’

ā€œPerfect Pastelsā€

I’ve been working on this one for a while and I’m so happy with how it’s come together 🌸

Every single flower in this piece has been picked, pressed, and placed by hand (which honestly takes forever, but it’s my favourite part). I love how all the different shapes and colours end up finding their place—soft pinks, tiny blues, little wild details everywhere you look.

It feels a bit like holding onto a moment in nature that would usually just pass by… and giving it a second life.

What’s your favourite flower in here? šŸ’
