The Considered Home is back…
Our series exploring the design decisions that can make a real difference to how a home looks, feels and functions.
For Edition 03, we’re talking about something we really love designing - bespoke joinery.
Not just because it can completely transform the look of a room, but because it has a rather wonderful way of solving all those little niggles that come with day to day living.
The awkward alcove that never quite works, the toys with nowhere to go, the mountain of shoes by the door, the empty space beneath a window, or the cupboards already in place but the insides facilitate a dumping ground rather than the perfect place for everything.
Good joinery starts with looking at how a space is used and asking how we can make it work harder.
One of our favourite examples is from our Great Shefford project. Our clients had bookcases sitting in front of their eaves cupboards, making the storage behind difficult to access. Rather than choosing between books or storage, we designed hinged bookcases that do both.
One other thing we know for sure, is that beautifully crafted joinery is a game changer in terms of how a space looks and feels. With mindful design these pieces become the show stoppers in the room and no two pieces are ever the same. It’s about turning something practical into something really unique.
Do you have an awkward, or underused space in your home that you’ve never quite known what to do with? We’d love to hear about it!
