Every story starts somewhere. This is where mine began.
My first pedestal arrangement, 1992, alongside a recent design. Looking back, I can see the beginnings of my style were there from the very first pedestal.
Michael Pooley Flowers is now in its 30th year of trading, so it feels like the perfect time to share the story behind TWIG and MPF including those early arrangements before the business began.
As I share more from the archives, you’ll see the fashions change: arrangements become more minimal, shapes shift, and colour palettes move on. Floristry follows fashion, and these photographs tell that story.
With Tate Britain’s new exhibition, The 90s: Art and Fashion, revisiting this first design feels particularly fitting. Those branching lines, generous flowers and trailing foliage feel familiar again. These photographs are a little record of what we were creating then — and how ideas return, interpreted afresh.
Thirty-four years later, there’s still something special about the first.
Follow for more from the archives over the coming months, the changing fashions, the flowers and the stories behind them. And if you remember any of these designs, I’d love to hear from you.
