Merrywood Soaps botanicals candles and oils inspired by the natural world

27/02/2021

We’ve joined another virtual market for Easter and Mothers day so thought you might like to see our little showcase reel. Turn the sound up and enjoy! Lots of treats for Maple and Rooster to get them to pose in front of the camera.

Well, in any other year we would be holding our Open days about now, As much a social event as a buying experience they have been an annual fixture for, ooh, about 20 years or more, and yes, I think some of you might have made it to most of them! Sadly, these worrying times mean we are online only at the moment, the cakes, chit chat and mulled wine will have to be virtual. We will miss seeing you all this year but hope to hold a catch up again in 2021. x

I found a little bit of magic growing out of the back door this morning! Best guess, with the help of an identification app, is Coprinellus micaceus, The Glistening Inkcap. Can you see those tiny white spots on the cap? True to their name they really did glisten in the early morning dew.

This is the tale of the covid corvids....
Thickneck wasn't hungry and decided to save her titbits. Three times she took a morsel and three times she scuttled off to bury it for later. The big black Crow spied this from afar and he was hungry, and looking forward to breakfast. Eagerly he swaggered after her and prodded and poked at the ground hoping to retrieve the tasty snack. Three times he watched her bury a snack and three times he flapped after her, the swagger becoming a stumble, the prod a frustrated stab in the mud.
The Magpie meantime cackled from the tree above then flew down for a closer look as Thickneck buried her third cache. No sooner had Fox turned, Magpie swooped in and claimed his prize. Too late Mr Crow.
I sat and I pondered, true the snacks made no sound, but both birds had used sight alone to locate the food. So I mused, have all birds lost their sense of smell, or just the covid corvids?
Stay safe everyone x

Thank you everyone for all the beautiful hydrangea flower heads you have brought around over the past few weeks. We grow lots and lots here but somehow never have enough. We couldn't make all our floral rings and hearts without you all. x
As you can see we've set to work straight away. Over the next few weeks I suspect we'll be making quite a few of them.

A little distracted by apple picking at the moment. Probably the biggest and best crop we have ever had thanks to the glorious weather we've had all summer long. Every one is a little gem; ruby red, sweet and juicy.

Sometimes life gives you lemons.
Faced with the challenge of not being able to get out and about in this strange and topsy turvy year we decided it was time to make a few changes here at Merrywood.
So, we've spent the summer creating our very own web site.
It's been fun taking the photos and a challenge learning how to put it all together, but overall I'd say we are quite proud of the final result. It won't be the same as seeing you all at a show but being online means you still get to enjoy our soaps, candles, botanicals and oils. If you get a moment, do take a look.

now, anyone for lemonade? x
