World Ocean Day is an annual global observance held on June 8th. Please read more below to find out 👇
What it is: World Ocean Day on June 8th was adopted by the UN General Assembly as a day to celebrate our shared connection to the ocean.
It has become a global moment for ocean advocates, consumers, NGOs, businesses, scientists, and champions to highlight their commitment to the ocean.
2026 Theme: This year’s theme is “One Ocean, One Climate, One Future – Together,” emphasizing our shared responsibility and the link between ocean health and climate action.
2026 Action Focus:
The 2026 action theme - Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet will guide global action over the coming years, aligning with the recent ratification of the High Seas Treaty and the global commitment to protect 30% of lands, waters, and ocean by 2030 (30×30).
Why it matters:
Oceans cover more than 70% of Earth’s surface, produce over half of the world’s oxygen, and provide food and livelihoods for millions, yet they face threats from overfishing, plastic pollution, and climate change.
How to get involved:
People are encouraged to organize beach cleanups, make sustainable seafood choices, reduce plastic waste, and advocate for policies that protect marine life.
