Duckling, Seafield Beach.
I was a good distance away but the ducks took slowly to the water when they heard the dog barking. Then I spotted this wee one and we backed way off down the beach. Mother duck and three others came back for it, but like a naughty toddler it kept walking away from her reluctant to go into the water. We left them to their duck business.
Google tells me these beautiful black and white eider ducks are common to the Kirkcaldy coastline and hatch primarily in May and early June. The eider is a coastal diving duck that feeds on shellfish and crabs and typically nests in the islands of the Firth.
Just a shout out to be especially wary of your dogs and wee ones on the beach at this time of year. JD
