I want to scream this from the rooftops: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SPINNING POLICE! 🚨

Spinning is a craft which spans millennia and although there is absolutely a large amount of theory that goes into learning how to spin - all of which will aid you in producing the yarn you desire - no alarms and big red lights will go off if you decide to play with the rules or you use the wrong term.

In fact, a large portion of the terminology that is used by modern spinners is only a few decades old and is very much open to interpretation, something that I had to keep reminding myself when trying to work out what to call the method I used for the final yarn sample of my mini series.

I ultimately went with ‘Marled’ as I feel like we are in danger of over-complicating things for the sake of it and really all I want to do with this series is encourage other spinners to play with techniques and have fun…

Anyway, the penultimate video is now live for you to watch and I am now working away in the background knitting and crocheting up all the samples so we can compare the results of my wee experiment!

Of COURSE the week that I planned to make a 'proper go' at revitalising my socials is when the household gets struck by the lurgy and all sense of productivity flies out of the window 🫠🤧

Luckily we're all starting to feel a lot better but annoyingly it meant that I didn't get chance to finish spinning up and filming the final yarn of my YT mini-series in time for this weekend...

Bear with me, I will be adding it to the channel on Wednesday and then making a start on working up the samples (the bit I'm most excited about!)

The latest episode of the Spinning a Yarn Vlog has been uploaded and was only an hour later than planned after a somewhat stressful night battling with technology.

I take full responsibility for having my laptop within toddler-keyboard-smashing reach for the ten seconds it took to initiate the export of the original video and have learned my lesson for future reference 🤦🏼‍♀️

(The Seal Pup very kindly overwrote a ten second section of actually quite important information with a very bad shot of me plying that didn’t make previous cuts and I didn’t realise until after it had been fully exported and partially uploaded to YT a full 5 hours after the fact 🫠 cue a very late night of fixing it and reexporting and uploading all over again after an already bad week of sleep so as not to upset the Algorithmic Overlord . Suffice to say that I am running on empty today… 💀)

Over the course of the last few weeks I have been working on a YT mini-series showing how hand dyed tops from my Friendship Collection can be spun up using a variety of techniques to get the yarn that you want.
Today the second method went live (link below) featuring a basic 2ply construction which is acting as a control yarn in order to compare the other techniques including fractal spinning and chain plying.
Suffice to say that even after a decade and a half of spinning I was still surprised by the outcome!

There’s another dye oven full of floof that’ll be ready in a few days time but in the meantime I have FINALLY found the time to get the last batch onto the website including the newest colourway in the Friendship Collection… somewhat vainly named Sealy… which was inspired by the colours in my logo.

Would you be interested in seeing how this fibre spins up?

I initially planned on just fractal spinning it to show you how that works but after a 1am brainwave figured it would be interesting to show you the same colourway spun up using 3 or 4 different techniques to compare the outcome…
