A rare survivor : a monumental four-sided French Medieval Gothic limestone capital or pedestal, c.1280–1350, from Northern France. Carved in deep relief, each face presents a distinct holy figure—an extraordinary survival of medieval devotional sculpture.

A robed cephalophore carrying his own head, evoking Saint Denis; Saint Martin on horseback sharing his cloak with a beggar; a warrior-saint in short tunic and sword strongly aligned with Saint Michael the Archangel; and a bishop with crozier standing over a creature at his feet.

Originally part of a shrine or chapel interior, this substantial 59cm fragment carries the atmosphere of late Gothic France—its narrative, movement and character still vivid after seven centuries. Now available online.

Just arrived and not online yet!

A wonderful Continental marquetry bureau, probably Dutch, circa 1880–1900, with sweeping bombe drawers, intricate floral marquetry and a striking grotesque mask at the centre of the fall front.

Particularly appealing are the realistically carved claw-and-ball feet, while the fall front opens to reveal an elaborate fitted interior with architectural detailing, small drawers, pigeonholes and concealed compartments.

Beautifully aged, retaining its rich colour, character and patina.

Dimensions: 113 cm wide × 58 cm deep × 114 cm high.

The kind of architectural lighting that makes an entrance.

An exceptional pair of original English corner lanterns, circa 1890, each standing 114 cm tall. Very seldom found as a pair at this scale, with scalloped copper tops, beautifully aged verdigris and substantial iron corner brackets.

Chris explores the details that give these lanterns their presence — from the surviving enamelled reflectors, suggesting their origins as gas lights, to the sculptural sweep of the copperwork.

Good garden sculpture deserves a closer look.

Chris introduces this finely cast group of three bronze cranes, influenced by Japanese Meiji-period decorative arts. Individually modelled poses, carefully worked plumage and elegantly arched necks give the group a compelling sense of movement.

The beautifully weathered green and brown patination brings depth to the casting, especially amongst planting. Three freestanding sculptures with real presence — whether beside water, in a courtyard or framed by foliage.

A striking set of four English buff terracotta garden urns, circa 1860–1880.

Boldly modelled as woven baskets, with twisted handles, foliate rims and substantial pedestal bases, they have all the character you want from old garden pieces — sculptural form, weathered surfaces and layers of historic paint.

Unmarked apart from the impressed model number 16, the quality of the moulding points to a substantial British pottery.

A strong, decorative set — and particularly good to find all four together.
