Lincrusta

Lincrusta Lincrusta is the ultimate wallcovering, combining classical and contemporary style with exceptional durability.

A British invention, Lincrusta was the brainchild of manufacturer, entrepreneur and inventor Frederick Walton. By adapting his remarkably successful floor covering product, Staines Linoleum, he applied it to walls, thus creating a stunning alternative to the popular but painstaking artisan plasterwork of the time. The Victorian middle-classes loved its durability, sanitary properties and ornate ef

fects and it was soon found transforming not just the interiors of homes but everything from railway carriages to royal palaces and even The White House. Completely unique and uniquely hard-wearing, Lincrusta offers the ability to create stunning yet bespoke highly decorative finishes. Whether you're recreating traditional splendour or making a contemporary statement, the Lincrusta Collection has a range of wallcovering designs perfect for residential and commercial projects. Made from natural materials, and hand-finished by craftsmen in exactly the same way as when it was invented in 1877, Lincrusta is a truly British wallcovering that has stood the test of time.

Rochdale Town Hall, a Grade I listed building, is often considered one of the UK’s finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture. It was designed by William Crossland, a pupil of George Gilbert Scott, in response to a competition held in 1864 to design a new town hall. Opened in 1871 as a symbol of the town’s industrial standing in the textile trade, it boasts splendid interior schemes.

The most incredible hand painted walls and ceilings, with symbolism throughout of the cotton trade, Rochdale’s historic global trade links and a record of the city’s democracy, honouring all of its mayors.

We were privileged to be welcomed by the current Mayor, in her Parlour Room (originally the magistrates retirement room) to witness with our own eyes, the fabulous renovation, which features our Morris & Co. Fruit wallpaper painted in jewel tones.

To discover more about this project look out for the Wallpaper History Society Review in autumn and future blog post.

Thank you to the wonderful team of volunteers for the extremely informative tour.

We highly recommend a visit.
