Saw a post this morning from a "Painter" moaning he was only getting £18 - £20 per hour and that cleaners get that... this was my response to it and i thought I'd share it with the public as I think it's good for you to take into account when getting prices too...
"Absolutely... thats bottom of the barrel tho. Some painters aren't worth that! Let me rephrase that... some people calling themselves painters aren't worth that! The problem with this trade is there's such a vast range of skill its impossible to have an across the board price unlike an electrician or plumber etc. A customer can get a price from 3 "decorators" and its for 3 totally different jobs"
So what i mean by this is someone turning up that's just taken up pai ting because his warehouse job has let him go, or he's had a go in his own house and got some brushes from B&M should not be nowhere near someone that's been doing it 30 years, runs a van, has all the best equipment from dustless sanders at almost £3,000 to all the best French fillers etc and a van full of things that If something goes wrong it can be sorted there and then so the jobs not delayed and other trades aren't delayed or your room is ready for that dinner party you are having or guest staying over. There is a huge difference in painters and decorators. This doesn't mean I'm expensive as I am far from it, what it means is you tend yo get what you pay for and someone charging low can usually mean you're going to be paying again to have it right or you could have just had a go yourself.
Also don't think the products don't matter when I say I have the best ones like French filler. French filler has fibres in it that cling to the issue which means it lasts longer and is less likely to fail. There's a reason for everything. My top coats and primer undercoats that I supply are the best, I use these for a reason because they last and stay whiter longer, also they have a resistance rating much higher than standard paints so they can take a beating.
Just bare all this in mind when comparing prices.
