Natalie Toms Wildlife Artist

Natalie Toms Wildlife Artist Wildlife art inspired by the countryside and coast, from a little studio in Cornwall. All of my drawings are created on coldpress watercolour paper.

I am a Cornish wildlife artist inspired by the woodlands, meadows, hedgerows, and coast of my beautiful home county. I have been strongly influenced by the natural world for as long as I can remember. I spent the summers of my childhood marvelling at the tall trees and little creatures in the fields behind my grandparents' house. I would always come in trailing sticks and leaves and other natural

ephemera from my wanderings. I have an affinity for the relationships between nature and those living in it. I am often found drawing in my garden studio, named 'Thickets', which over looks the meadow that provides a home to much of the wildlife that inspires my art. When I'm not in my studio, I enjoy wandering and taking photographs in the rambling woods, climbing around ivy-entwined ruins, wild coasts and along the dappled rivers of my beloved Cornwall. I create detailed drawings of flora and fauna by initially sketching the subject in pencil followed by stippling in pen to build up detail. 'Stippling' is to paint, engrave, or draw by means of dots. I use Faber-Castell brush-tip India ink Pitt pens when working in colour and Sakura Micron black pigment fineliners for my pure black work. I take as many of my own photographs as I can to use as a reference for my drawings and I also use a variety of natural history and reference books along with the internet to inform my detailed studies. I take extra great care to ensure that my art materials and supplies are both cruelty-free and vegan-friendly. I package all of my parcels using environmentally-friendly recycled and recyclable materials. I studied Fine Art and Graphics: Illustration at A-level before returning a couple of years later and completing an Art Foundation Diploma with a level 4: distinction. After working for several years in retail, I completed a short business course with Outset Cornwall in 2016 which instilled in me the confidence I needed to take myself seriously and begin moving towards my dream of working as an artist full-time.

5% of all sales of my work is donated to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust. By supporting me as a local artist, you are also ensuring the survival of the wildlife on your doorstep. http://www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk/

I've been meaning to add my contribution to this amazing project for a while. After the recent sunshine, I took a little wander over to my favourite oak tree, where I used to spend hours climbing and sitting in it as a child, wildlife watching, writing and sketching away. My 'Nuthatch & Oak' piece felt like the right choice, given the subject matter and how important oak trees are to wildlife.

The project is raising awareness for in Cornwall, promoting and supporting reforestation work in our beautiful county. If you're a fellow creative, why not add your own?

Just a little check-in. I had my first therapy session today. It was mostly introductions and laying some of the groundwork but I'm already feeling some relief from opening up and waffling on to my therapist. It's long overdue.

My oak gall ink painting of Cornwall's medieval hermitage in Roche is now available to buy as a hand signed archival print. It's my first landscape painting celebrating Cornwall's heritage.

The print is available on my Etsy shop. (NatalieTomsArtist.etsy.com)

I'd love to hear what you think I should add to my new heritage series next!

A wild Nat appeared!

Stranger still, she's sharing a photo of herself with her teeth on show! I know there's nothing inherently wrong with those teeth, a bit of overcrowding, a slight overbite and they're sensitive to hot and cold, but they're mine.

When I was a teenager, an orthodontist told me my teeth were too big for my mouth and I needed 5 removed, to have a straight smile. I didn't think it was necessary to have healthy teeth taken out, especially given my health issues, so I chose not to. Regardless, those comments have followed me for years and I've rarely smiled with my teeth showing in photos ever since. It's a shame, really. The insecurities form in a young girl's mind.

Anyway, it's mid March and I'm still trying to get back into the swing of running a little business this year. I've lost a few stockists and sales are down, and I know I'm not the only one feeling it. March is also my late mum's birthday and Mothering Sunday so I've been dipping in and out, and doing my best not to punish myself for being out of step.

I hope you're all looking after yourselves, and if it hasn't already found you, give Small Prophets a try. "The magical and the mundane unfold in a suburban shed as a lonely man stumbles into the supernatural. A weird and wonderful world from Mackenzie Crook..."

As a fellow shed-dweller, and collector of old books and curios, I feel a strong affinity to Michael (and his homunculi). One of the nicest things I've watched in a long while.

Made with oak gall ink on cartridge paper, this is the first of my Ertach Kernow (Cornwall Heritage) series. I capture the magnificent landscape, folklore and cultural roots of my heartland Cornwall.

This original will be available to buy and prints will follow dreckly.

(Please enjoy/excuse the song choice, Roche Rock always reminded me of Tolkien's Middle Earth and I've been fascinated with it ever since!)

• Roche Rock in progress •

I gave the well a gentle shake to release the sediment and found my paper palette for mark making. Opening the sketchbook cover to reveal my work in progress. I dipped my brush into the ink and formed new markings, a colder shade that hasn't yet been warmed by daylight. The older ink holds sepia notes like the oak iron it was made of. Time weathers the quartz-tourmaline structure, much like it ages the ink. There's something beautiful in painting the landscape with an element from it.

Breaking in a new sketchbook with a heron. A plan for the new year.

No Christmas music, just a little tribute to a post-hardcore band I've loved for years and was fortunate enough to see reunited for a one-off tour, 20 years after they disbanded. Incredible. So good to see you live at last, !

I'll be changing a few things up as I step into 2026. I'll be ending my hand signed open edition prints and moving forward with limited edition hand signed print runs instead. This will keep my focus on creating new work.

My Etsy shop will remain open for a few more days before I close for Christmas. Thanks for every sale so far this season!

I haven't been doing many Christmas markets and fairs this year, to be perfectly honest the joy and enthusiasm for Christmas has been pretty thin on the ground. My family has had a lot of bereavement over the past 6 years, and grief hits harder at Christmas. Lately I've just been doing the bare minimum. I did however buy some velvet ribbon and make some bows for the tree. I love the way it looks, something a little different.

I have one more Christmas event to go, the Bank Bazaar at The Cornish Bank in Falmouth. It's a fantastic venue and we'll be trading from 1pm until 9pm on December 18th!

If you can't pay me a visit there, you can still buy my work through my Etsy shop or drop me a message to visit me in my (very messy) studio.

Wishing you all a merry season.
