I’ve so many thoughts bubbling away at the moment, some gorgeous wonderful things are happening on the farm, in life and in the world but at the same time (you know because of the duality of being human) there are things that feel hard, challenging and difficult.

I think about the climate and state of world every single day and the people in power who are worsening the situation. I think of the imbalances in society and the hard choices that we are all facing.

It’s always in these moments that Mother Nature seems to gift a mindful, joyful, moment and as I was about to take a photo of peony foliage to send to a lovely florist this absolutely stunning, perfect small copper butterfly was quietly taken a break between the rain showers.

Forever grateful for the tiny moments, the small beautiful creatures and the reminder to pause and take a breath.

It’s not been the easiest summer to work outdoors, growing a product that relies on water. I’ve been sad but determined and I thought I would share things that are giving me hope as we navigate another heat wave.

1. I have saved so many seeds - enough for me and for others so there will be some Gathered at Dusk seeds available soon. It’s super easy to save seeds. Share with something simple like Nigella. Things are drying quickly so they are not damp and can be stored quickly and easily.

2. Making my own compost and mulch from regenerative materials on the farm - meadow grass, wood chipping, duck p**p, weeds and windfalls from the Apple trees. I would like as much as possible! The growing piles make me feel better about everything. Seriously grateful to a lovely person whose ponies are supplying me with extra manure!

3. Cutting to dry - the ceiling racks are filling up and things are drying quickly and holding their colour. I think I may have enough for some fun workshops… watch this space 👀

Other things include: conversations with likeminded folk, hearing more people are looking to grow veg, seeing people putting water out for wildlife, more community conversations about what next.

The great willow has fallen.

For those of you who have been to the farm you may know or remember the huge willow that stands between the orchard and the back field. It’s an imposing tree that’s seen many many decades if not centuries.

In January I spotted a hairline crack running down the main trunk and I’ve been watching this gradually open and yesterday it fully opened and a huge limb has landed.

The ever resilient willow will now put roots down where it’s landed and we have the decision as custodians of the land to either let her do her thing or reopen the access over the bridge.

It’s been quite something to watch this slowly happen over the last 7 months and I’ve no doubt that the drought and strong, warm winds have sped things up the past two months.

It’s a beautiful tree and will no doubt out live us all and this is a new iteration of how it lives on. The rotten wood in the middle of the trunk is an excellent habitat for insects.

When I make a wedding bouquet I like to think of the person it’s for, what they loved when they visited the field, their personality, sentimental flowers and how they want to feel on their wedding day.

This bouquet was made especially for when Hannah came to photograph the farm so no wedding for it. So instead I thought of dear friend who’s a big fan of the ruffles of roses, loves a soft lilac bloom and is a total superstar. And I adore this very romantic bouquet and that lovely friend too.

I have made the very hard decision to not cut or sell any flowers for 10 days. This is to give me a chance to deadhead, water, mulch and rest a very tired field.

As a land worker I am seeing the huge impact of the heat, drought and warm winds. I have soils that are mulched and cared for but they need even more tlc.

Flowers are a luxury a very much enjoyable and mindful Luxury but those growing food are experiencing the same challenges that I am. I also grow fruit and the plan is to sell more of this in future so I need to spend time ensuring the new fruit trees make it to 2027 and beyond.

I would say I’m a pretty resilient gal but the past few weeks have been challenging indeed.

We are not powerless - support your local food growers, lobby your mp, make sustainable choices and decisions based on the lives of future generations.

Solidarity to other flower farmers, market gardens, food growers and small holders.

June round up

Tiny moments from my favourite month of the year.

Highlights - armfuls of roses and sweet peas, spotting butterflies, farm visitors, weddings, freelancing, starting new projects and ‘project Beatrix’ stepping up a gear.

Low lights - heat wave, not enough rain, couch grass, thistles, failed crops and balancing life/work.

Lessons - more mulch is needed, help is important and spectacular for reducing overwhelm.

Aim for next June: I want to grow more and do more for the wildlife on the farm. And to have nudged a bit closer to my big audacious goal.

Maybe every month I should do a little round up what do you think? What have your highlight, low lights and lessons for June been?

The bees are helping make me feel better …

I’ve had my most successful larkspur crop but they are all flowering at once, so I’ve deadheaded in a way that I can dry them and hopefully still get some more, albeit shorter stems.

The snaps I’m hoping with a big water I will get some second flowers but over 100 are heading to the compost pile.

The dahlias have loved the heat and I will be cutting those next week (silver linings and all that)

The weeds have also been enjoying the heat so there is some graft to get on top of those ( sow thistle aplenty)

The best thing of flowers blowing open is the utter joy of how many bees, hover flies and butterflies have been feeding on them. It really softens the blow of the financial losses and that even though our climate is changing thoughtfully managed farms can help with habitats for nature.

It’s a joy to play a part in a wedding day. To hear about the plans, the excitement building, to get a sneak preview of the dress, to see the couple in the pre wedding moments. And then you leave knowing that they are about to have the most amazing day and I often spend the rest of the day thinking about how the day is going. So when the photos are delivered you get a little glimpse of the magic and the joy and it’s such a treat to see what happened.

Last night I pored over Laura and Ash’s photos. Their day was totally amazing and captured so beautifully by a very talented photographer Jules Barron - Wedding Photographer

There are so many wonderful photos to share, but I am starting with a moment for the bouquet. A ruffly, romantic bouquet full of spring flowers and the best of the field.

There was even some apple blossom tucked into it. When the brief is ‘the best of the field’ this means you get all the yummiest things the season has to offer.

The field looks beautiful, the flowers are blooming but it’s so very hot.

Its too hot to work in the field. It’s actually too hot for May, it’s 16 degrees above the average temperature for the 25th May. Some of the flowers are ok, others are not looking happy at all. It’s days like this that make me think what adaptations will I need to make in the future as a grower.

I am grateful that this orange tipped butterfly was on the sweet rocket.

The butterfly is a reminder of why I leave huge sections of the farm for nature and that it’s important that I do that. I hope today the wildlife can make use of the shady damp areas of the land.
