💜 I teach Introduction to Fibre sessions in my studio in Keighley. I am completely self-taught and have over a decade of experience with processing fibre and spinning.

🩷 You will learn all about skirting and carding fibre, with a range of fibre to choose from, and then will learn how to spin your fibre on a drop spindle. This is the best way to learn how to spin yarn as it allows you to go at your own pace

🧡 These sessions offer a chance for beginners to start their spinning journey, but also for people to come and refine their spinning skills. If comfortable, you will have the chance to practice on one of my 3 wheels - you may find it's your new favourite thing!

💜 80 metres of the softest and most beautiful hand spun alpaca, my first custom spin in ages. This has been skirted, carded and spun to a double knit weight.

🩷 I've really enjoyed doing this. There's a lot more fibre to prepare and spin, and I will be spinning some mixed colour, and then some of the individual colours too.

💜 Before I spin any fibre on my wheel, it needs sorting and carding. Sorting removes dirt, debris, and short fibers, while carding lines up the fibre in the same direction. Together this creates a clean, smooth, and even batt of fibre that drafts easily and spins into a strong, yet airy yarn.

🩷 Fleeces contain dust, sand, dried sweat from the animal, and vegetable matter like hay, thorns, and grass seeds, all of which need to come out. I get the majority before carding, but some comes out through the carding process also - you should see what hides under my drum carder!!

🧡 I also need to sort any 'second cuts' which are short pieces of wool cut twoce by the shearer. This ruins yarn strength and gives it an uneven texture.

💛 Carding helps align the fibers, it straightens the hairs so they all point the same way, and it mixes different shades or textures for a uniform look. It also opens up clumps and removes any hidden knots.

✨ Introduction To Fibre ✨

💜 These sessions are designed to introduce you to the wonderful world of spinning your own yarn.

💙 You’ll learn about a variety of fibres, including wool, silk, alpaca and other speciality fibres. We’ll explore how to prepare fibres using different tools, including hand carders and drum carders, before moving on to the exciting process of drafting fibre and creating different styles and weights of yarn, from art yarn and worsted to delicate lace weight.

💚 We’ll mainly be practising with drop spindles, as it is the easiest way to begin learning how to draft and spin fibre. You’ll also have the opportunity to use a Turkish spindle, treadle spinning wheels and an electric spinning wheel, giving you a chance to explore different ways of turning fibre into yarn. You’ll also learn how to use a drum carder and blending board to prepare and blend your fibres.

💛 Humans have been spinning fibre for thousands of years, but thankfully, the tools we have available today are a little more user-friendly! We’ll take things at your own pace and build your confidence as you learn.

🧡 These are 3-hour workshops, giving you plenty of time to learn, ask questions and get lots of hands-on practice. Please bring some lunch or snacks if you think you’ll need them during the session.
