From the first cut of fabric, through all the measuring, stitching and finishing touches, to seeing it finally hanging in its new home.

I spend so much time looking at these pieces on my worktable that there’s always something really satisfying about seeing the finished result exactly where it was made to be.

This one turned out beautifully — and I love how the fabric works in the room. 🤍

Made to measure here in my Lesmahagow workshop.

And that’s me officially on holiday 🤍

The iron is off, the machines are off and the workshop door is closed for a week.

I’m taking a proper wee break before coming back to what is already shaping up to be a very busy run towards Christmas.

I’ll reply to all messages and enquiries when I’m back on the 14th
September. See you then!

I feel as though tiebacks don’t get nearly enough appreciation.

They can sometimes have a slightly old-fashioned reputation, but the right one can completely finish a curtain—whether that’s a large statement tassel, something soft and neutral or a simple cord that quietly holds everything in place.

They’re another opportunity to pull colours from the fabric, connect the curtains with the rest of the room or add a little bit of detail to something otherwise quite plain.

A supplier I return to for them is Copper Fox. They have such a lovely choice of styles and colours, and somehow the right one always makes the curtain feel properly finished rather than simply held back.

Here are a few Copper Fox tiebacks I’ve used and chosen for different projects. I’m not sure I could pick a favourite—although the dark navy one is making a fairly convincing argument 😍

Are you a tieback person, or do you prefer your curtains hanging loose?

Choosing the fabric was only the first decision for this room.

The same textured green needed to work across two very different openings—a narrow glazed door and a much wider set of patio doors—while sitting alongside an already quite striking floral wallpaper.

Then there was the hardware finish, which heading would suit the texture of the fabric, how each curtain should open and where it needed to stack so the doors could still be used comfortably.

None of those decisions feels particularly dramatic on its own, but they all need to work together for the finished curtains to look right and function properly in the room.

That’s one of the benefits of having something made to measure. You don’t need to arrive already knowing which heading, pole, track or arrangement will work best. We look at the whole room and work through those choices together before anything is made.

Because choosing the fabric is often the exciting part—but it’s definitely not the only part 🤍

I’ve finally started making the new display curtains for the showroom.

I spend most of my working week helping clients choose fabrics and confidently telling them what will work together. When it comes to @ making those decisions for my own space, apparently I need several months and approximately 47 changes of mind 🙈

But the fabrics have been chosen, the first cuts have been made and they’re officially in progress.

I’m combining the soft patterned fabric with the warm rust and a small contrasting detail to pull everything together. They’re certainly not finished yet—and the rest of the corner still needs some work—but it feels good to have finally started.

I’ll show you how they turn out once I’ve made a little more progress.

There’s quite a lot that happens between choosing a fabric and seeing the finished curtains hanging in your room.

Calculating quantities, working with pattern repeats, deciding where the design should fall, choosing the right heading and hardware, cutting accurately, hand-finishing, pressing, fitting and dressing everything properly.

Most of it is the part you never really see—but it’s what makes the finished result feel considered and made for your room, rather than simply made to fit a set of measurements.

That’s what you’re paying for with bespoke: not just fabric and sewing, but the experience and attention behind every decision.
If you’re thinking about new curtains or blinds but aren’t sure where to begin, that’s all part of the service too 🤍

I think I’ve finally decided what I’m doing with this little corner of the showroom.

At the moment, it’s a bit of a mixture of old displays, fabric books and things that have gradually found themselves a home there 😅 But I’d love it to feel more intentional—and actually be useful when clients visit.

The plan is to use this beautiful blush fabric from Archroll Fabrics for a new curtain, add a proper display showing the different heading styles available, and bring in a pop of 'Uluru Sunset' paint on the display wall. The rest will stay fairly neutral so the colour and fabrics can do the talking.

This is still very much at the “moving things around in my head” stage, but I can properly picture it now.

Would you be brave enough to use the terracotta—or would you keep the whole space neutral?

Pattern matching is one of those details that most people never notice... until it's not done properly.

When I'm making handmade curtains, I carefully match the pattern across each width of fabric so the design flows seamlessly from one panel to the next. It's a small detail that takes time, but it's one of the things that makes bespoke curtains look so polished.

Every pair of made to measure curtains I make is individually cut, matched, sewn and finished by hand here in my workshop.

It's these little details that make all the difference to the finished result.

For years, I believed that comment.

It's amazing how one sentence from someone in a position of authority can stay with you.

Looking back now, I don't think I was a "bad student" at all. I was curious, I asked too many questions, I got completely absorbed in research and, yes, I was disorganised.

Years later I was diagnosed with ADHD and autism, and suddenly so much of my time in education made sense.

That experience didn't stop me. It made me determined to build something where I could work with my brain instead of constantly feeling like I was working against it.

Ten years into running Ardloch Interiors, I've created hundreds of bespoke curtains and blinds, worked in homes all over Scotland, and every kind message from a customer reminds me that one person's opinion never gets to define your future.

If you're doubting yourself because of something someone once said about you, I hope this reminds you that people can be wrong.

✨ Has anyone ever said something to you that stuck with you for years?
