And just like that it’s sermon Sunday again! I mean it feels scarily like life is speeding on by way too fast right now! It is too fast! How are we in September already!
Time really needs to slow down just a bit so I can catch up!
Also, I found out I’m going to be a great aunt again early next year which is very exciting! I’m all for the family growing and changing. It takes a village and I’m happy to be part of that village.
Yesterday, was nice and chilled. I did some gardening, ate a lot and played with the dogs. No great shakes, nothing to write home about but a wonderful day nonetheless. Sometimes the ordinary days are the best. I like those days when there’s no hurry, hurry, rush, rush…..they are the best days.
My sermon today is about another theory, The Waiting Room Theory.
Look around you?
Who’s gonna sit with you in that waiting room, in times of crisis for hours on end patiently? Who’s gonna add to your life and not take away from it when you need it the most? Who’s going to make it about you and your needs, not theirs, in that moment?
You see? It’s a simple theory. We go through life collecting people and also ditching them. Sometimes they leave on their own accord. Often they don’t get the opportunity to stay. Some come and go in a flash you are left reeling and full of questions?
Everyone we meet has a part to play in shaping our lives, our destiny and our outlook. They aren’t all meant to do the whole life thing with us. Still, we are grateful when there’s one last person standing, as long as you have each other’s back, it’s gonna be just fine.
Not everyone is going to stay forever. Not everyone sticks. Everyone is a lesson learned in some way. Good and bad.
Those that do stay?
We have big expectations of them. When the shi* hits the fan, we absolutely expect them to be there. We don’t want excuses. We don’t wish to be grateful or equally, disappointed.
After several decades of living, you realise there are just a few of those in the pack that will make time for you, drop everything for you and come running, no questions asked.
The sad fact is, we probably won’t ask.
Why?
Most of us don’t like to bother anyone, I certainly don’t but in a crisis I’d ring, I’d ask and I would fully understand it would be difficult but I’d expect these key people in my life to do the difficult parts with me.
Sat here drinking tea, I just know who is on that list and it’s not as many as you’d think.
So, The Waiting Room really sorts the wood out from the chaff doesn’t it? We already know who would let us down and so we wouldn’t bother them.
Real friendship and yes that includes your family and partner, requires a lot at times. One can’t just opt in and out when it suits. Let me be clear, we should never let anyone pick up and drop us at their convenience. Like any relationship it’s about compromise. Nothing is perfect but you’ve got to work out where you draw that line.
The Waiting Room really is a space in your head to ask the ‘what if’s’ and should the worse happen, who’s going to be there even if the ending isn’t going to be pretty?
We all have fair weather friends, the once in a blue moon friends, friends that shared history with but oh so long ago and finally, friends that betray or cheat us and hang on somehow. It’s an ever revolving lift isn’t it?
We never really know anyone, not really but it’s really good to know who will grab a spade and hide that dead body with you!
That dead body could be a relationship breakdown, an illness or something else that needs a deeper level of support.
It doesn’t matter what it is, you call, they come.
Close your eyes for a minute.
You started in a waiting room full of people.
Who’s left?
