The original name was "The Banquet Sauce", but the name was changed to HP Sauce when Garton heard that they served it in the restaurant in the Houses if Parliament. This HP sauce bottle, is circa 1903 as this is when Frederick Gibson Garton sold the company to the Midland Vinegar Company.
Pre 1903 would have had Garton's name on the bottle.
The company was sold to settle a debt.
So, this little bottle could be 122 years old!
This type of bottle would have been a sample bottle. Travelling salesmen would have had these to try & sell to hotels, restaurants & shops.
