The shark has come home, and it’s great to have her back, where she was created. 400,000,000 years ago Ystumtuen was underwater, and Deep Blue’s ancestors would have been swimming around where the studio is, so it’s the first time a shark has been here, for a long, long time…

Two cuckoos in the woodland. There’s one that stays overnight, so I hear it at dawn, dusk and sporadically through the day. It’s the boys that make the sound, so I suppose it must be a territory dispute.

I occasionally spot one, and they look like a cross between a sparrowhawk and pigeon. The former design is so that they give the small birds a fright, enabling the females to lay their eggs. Once the small birds realise who it is, a chase ensues, and I’ve sometimes seen one being chased by a small flock, across the landscape. This creates an even better opportunity for the female.

In no time at all they’ll be heading back to the Congo, and the fledglings will be appearing. Cuckoos are highly endangered, and on the red list, the highest conservation priority, so I feel very lucky to hear and see them each year.

From the second half of June, July and August, my studio in Ystumtuen is going to be open for viewings by appointment. The life-size great white shark, and other artworks will be on display.

Two rooms (one with a double and one with a king-size) at my house Pen, with complimentary breakfasts will be available, along with optional hamper luncheons, and four course dinners all prepared and cooked by me.

It’s a very beautiful location, with walks, lakes, a stone circle, mountains, beaches, rivers, lakes and valleys on the doorstep, or short drive.

The cuckoo in the woodland yesterday evening. I’ve seen it four times so far this year, once being chased by some small birds. The male distracts them, while the female lays her eggs, which mimic the eggs of the specific nests they’re targeting. Nature is impartial and incredible, in equal measures.

I’m so pleased with how well the new green looks in the upstairs spare room - it makes such a difference! I see the colour in the Cambrians in all four seasons, so it’s perfect for Pen.

My 1058 tile hand-drawn mural of an Indo-Pacific reef, full of some of my favourite inhabitants of the sea. What an incredible, precious and special planet we live on. The tile’s are a bit wonky as I had very little time to put it up, before boxing for transportation - and they’re handmade.

Each tile measures 5 x 5 cm. and the overall piece 2.5 x 1.2m, and I’ll be exhibiting it at The Petworth Park Art & Antiques Fair (8-10 May), and then The Decorative Fair in Battersea Park (12-17 May). Please dm me if you’d like complimentary tickets.

The male cuckoo has arrived, and made the woodland at the back of Pen his base again - it’s such a milestone in the year, and confirms that early summer has arrived💫. You can listen to him singing in the video I’ve just filmed. It’s such a magical ancient sound, and incredible that he’s flown all the way from Africa - most likely from the Congo, Gabon or Cameroon.

On 29 July last year, a fledgling perched on the dying ash branch outside my bedroom window, being fed by a meadow pipit, whilst imitating the sounds of a chick. It inspired me to capture the scene on a ceramic panel, for a beautiful 19th century handmade Italian water-gilded free standing frame.
