The upcoming show ‘Of Hands and Matter’ approaches ceramics beyond their form and function. Each work bears the trace of making — gestures of trial, imperfection, and care.

Moving beyond the Western art-historical view of ceramics as a fixed craft, these pieces act
as agents of relation and reflection, as portals between the tactile and the affective, the material and the experiential.

Featuring new and recent works by Adéle Williams, Lisa Sjukur, Leanne Vieira, Ewelina Bartkowska, Finty Cahill, Ella Cairns, and Violaine Verry, the exhibition celebrates the multiplicity of contemporary ceramic practice — where clay becomes a language for
process, connection, and transformation.

We invite you to the opening of ‘Of Hands and Matter’ — a group exhibition at the Art Academy London, opening on Thursday, 7 November from 5:30 pm.

Curated by Jagoda Witkowska and Lucia Jurikova.

Sponsored by The Art Academy.

July 2025 - I just got back from a fantastic trip to Wytham Woods in Oxfordshire to do a fast wood firing at under the generous guidance of and , alongside , and , all from .

6 women, 2 kilns, a lot of wooden pallets to break down (a task I miserably failed at), cauldron-size meal prep sessions, a lot of cleaning, and 13hrs spent in front of a very hot kiln.

I came back to London amazed, but also somewhat shell-shocked by the experience: my chronic insomnia, combined with the intensity of the process, as well as getting to know new people in new settings meant I struggled at times. But it’s important to shake things up and try new things – something our pottery students also experience when they come to the studio.

The results of our wood firing are stunning, the flames turning simple pots into things of beauty - even if not all were successful. I will be posting pieces in the next few days.

I am truly humbled by the skill and effort involved – thank you so much, Adele and Lisa for inviting us along, and .a.Wilson for creating this wonderful place.

Also really lovely to meet the talented , Svend and on the anagama kiln, and on the 3rd fast fire kiln. Also more unexpectedly met who was doing a tour of the site courtesy of – I did my best to try and convince her to take up pottery as a distraction from studying the s*x life of bonobos!
