Inside the Design Process: Highgate, North London

A first look at our latest project: the renovation of a five-bedroom flat within a landmark 1933 Art Deco development in Highgate, designed by Scottish architect William Bryce Binnie.

Working within a building of this architectural significance brings its own considerations, with certain constraints around what can and cannot be changed. Our approach is to respect the clarity and character of the original architecture while creating a home that feels relevant for modern life.

Our clients were drawn to the simplicity of Japandi design, with its natural materials, clean lines and understated elegance. We developed a timeless, quietly luxurious interior with a peaceful atmosphere and a strong connection to nature, introducing subtle touches of colour through artwork and details.

The moodboards and visualisations offer a glimpse into the design direction for this home.

How do you modernise a period home without losing what made it special in the first place?

It’s a balance we navigate often when working with period properties.

For us, it isn’t about recreating the past or stripping away every traditional detail in the name of modernisation. It’s about understanding which elements give the home its character, and finding ways to make them work alongside contemporary living.

Colour can give original mouldings a completely different feel. Contemporary lighting and furniture can create contrast against traditional architecture. Bespoke storage can solve the practical challenges of an older property without fighting against its proportions.

Ultimately, the most successful period homes feel neither overly traditional nor disconnected from their history. They feel personal, relevant and designed for the way their owners live today.

Before & After: Kitchen Transformation | Crouch End Project

When our clients bought their Crouch End home, the kitchen was already relatively new and spacious. But it never really felt like theirs.

Despite its size, there wasn’t enough worktop or storage, everyday items quickly created clutter, and the industrial feel made the space feel colder than they wanted for the heart of their family home.

We completely rethought how the kitchen worked, creating more storage and preparation space, a breakfast bar and plenty of room for hosting family and friends. The new palette brought warmth and personality, while different lighting scenarios made the space work throughout the day.

There were also a few less obvious challenges to solve along the way, from creating dining lighting beneath a glass roof to figuring out how to get the clients’ dream fridge into a kitchen it physically couldn’t reach through the doors. 👀

Today, it’s somewhere the family genuinely enjoys spending time throughout the day, whether they’re cooking, having breakfast or entertaining friends.

Every project is a collaboration, and creating a home that feels personal to our clients means taking the time to listen, understand what matters to them and guide them through every stage of the process.

Working with a period property brought its own challenges, making creativity, attention to detail and close communication particularly important throughout this project.

Knowing that the experience, as well as the finished home, exceeded Yelena’s expectations is incredibly rewarding.

Timeless doesn’t have to mean neutral.

There’s a common idea that if you want your home to stand the test of time, you need to play it safe with colour.

We don’t believe that.

Colour can bring warmth, energy and personality into a home while still feeling considered and sophisticated for years to come.

The key is how it’s used. The right tones, combinations and balance can make a space feel distinctly yours without following a trend that will quickly date.

Some of our most colourful interiors are also the ones that feel the most enduring, because the choices were shaped around the people living there rather than what happened to be popular at the time.

Your home doesn’t need to be neutral to be timeless. It needs to feel like you. 🤍

Your designer just spent 3 hours solving a problem you will never know about.

And that’s exactly how it should be.

Renovations rarely go entirely to plan. Something unexpected is discovered on site. A detail doesn’t work as intended. A supplier changes a lead time. A product arrives incorrectly. A builder needs an answer before they can continue.

Behind what might look like a simple decision can be hours of phone calls, drawings, conversations with contractors and finding an alternative that doesn’t compromise the overall design.

Our clients don’t need to be involved in every one of those conversations.

They need to know that someone is paying attention, making decisions and keeping their project moving forward.

A big part of our job happens quietly behind the scenes, solving problems before they become your problems.

Ensuite Transformation | Muswell Hill Family Home

Sitting just off the master bedroom, we wanted this ensuite to feel connected to the calm, cocooning atmosphere we had created next door, while giving it a character of its own.

Deep green tiles bring richness to the shower, balanced by warm neutral walls, dark wood and brass details. The herringbone splashback introduces another layer of pattern and texture without overwhelming the smaller space.

Storage was carefully considered too, keeping everyday necessities organised and allowing the room to remain visually calm.

It’s a small room, but one that forms an important part of the clients’ everyday routine, from busy mornings to slower evenings.

A beautiful design means very little if it can’t actually be brought to life.

Before we start thinking about layouts, colours, materials, furniture and lighting, there are bigger questions to answer.

What are you trying to achieve? How does your home need to work for your lifestyle? What is realistic within your budget and timeline? And how do we turn all of those ideas into one clear vision?

Only then do we begin developing the design itself, from the creative details you see to the practical and technical decisions behind them.

Because our job isn’t to hand over a beautiful set of drawings and leave you to figure out the rest.

In Part 2, we’ll take you behind the next stage: how we take the design off the page and bring it to life.

Muswell Hill Project | Living Room Transformation

Warm, cosy, functional and emotionally uplifting. This was the vision behind our Muswell Hill living room.

We reworked the layout around the family’s everyday life, including their much-loved Friday movie nights, and introduced layers of lighting for reading, relaxing and quieter evenings.

In this north-facing room, colour played an important role too. A rusty orange sofa brings warmth and character, balanced with softer greens inspired by the garden and pinkish-violet accents throughout.

What was once a colder, less inviting room is now somewhere the whole family naturally gravitates towards, whether they’re relaxing together, reading or having friends over. 🤍
