What is your favourite plant species? Hoya has been my number one fave for quite a while and no other species seem be able to beat it.

I bought my very first Hoya, the Hoya Krimson Queen, at the and didn’t realise it was one, until I stumbled up on the Plant One Me episode on YouTube with Torill Nyhuus, the Swedish Hoya Lady, who had a collection of over 400 hoya’s.

I took a closer inspection of my plant, it’s thick waxy leaves, the variegation and realised I need more Hoya’s.
A few years down the line, now, I own 25 types of Hoya’s (and I know for a fact I’m not done, familiar?)

A few days ago I found out through ‘s post that Torill Nyhuus has sadly passed away. It truly saddened me, because meeting her over the screen had felt so real. I hope she will rest in peace in her favourite Hoya garden.

If you haven’t watched the episode, I highly recommend you do. YouTube ‘Plant One On Me’ Episode 113, check my stories for further details.

Whether you’re a foliage or flower lover, we can all agree that hyacinths are the absolute show stoppers of this moment!

I bought this baby only a week ago for a couple of ££ from the local supermarket. Had to take it out of the pot it came with as it was completely root for and repotted in terracotta with The Plant Boutique’s own soil mix and they’re thriving. The smell of the flowers have taken up the entire room!

⚠️Ok, can we talk about PEAT?!⚠️👇🏽

What is peat and why is it so important?
Peat, peat moss or spaghnum moss, is a build up of organic matter and partially decayed plant material. Peat bogs absorb and store large amounts of carbon dioxide making them ideal for helping to tackle climate change.

However, peat bogs are often dug up for horticulture use. Amateur gardening only accounts for 69% of peat compost used in the UK and we use some three billion litres (!) of peat every year in our gardens.
Bear in mind, that peat ‘grows’ by only a millimetre a year and commercial extraction can remove over 500 years worth of ‘growth’ in a single year.

Our current use of peat is very unsustainable and it’s simply not talked about enough. As nature lovers, we must not be silent or live unaware. It simply goes against all that we hold so dear, our green friends 🪴, who have brought so much light into peoples lives.
It's time we put a halt to this destructive practice.

So what can you do about peat?
1. Only buy peat-free compost (and potted plants). One of the best alternatives for peat is coco coir, also called coco or coco peat. It is the most versatile of all the organic growing mediums and a natural waste product of the coconut-growing industry. It is excellent for gardening because of its water-retaining capability. At The Plant Boutique we have made a conscious decision from day 1 to use coco coir in all soil blends and other peat free components.

2. Tell your friends and family about the issue and encourage them to go peat-free and share this post with as many plant lovers as possible

3. Ask your local retailers to stock and promote more peat-free choices, to make it easier for consumers to go peat-free (if these are national companies, please also email or write to their headquarters)

4. Check what your government and other organisations are doing, sign petition where possible!

Look at this baby!
Anthurium Crystalinum, the young fierce sister of the Anthurium Clarinervium. Why? Because this lady is a fast grower, will get bigger leaves and is actually less fussy.

It is now available in 3 sizes aka for all budgets. They’ve been in my care for over 6 months, are showing new growth and so completely acclimatised to the lovely ⛈ U.K. weather 🥴

Fun fact 💡 : the anthurium is part of the Arum family but most people know it as a type or Aroid.
Aroids are known for their primitive flower style called a spadix, which is protected by a fleshy, false leaf called a spathe.
Heat generated from this spathe melts snow, making it one of the first flowers to show up in spring in North America.

I’m so proud to share with you the newest plant care addition to the shop: the TPB Vegan Plant Food 🍭🧃🧇!

When it came to developing The Plant Boutique's very own Plant Food, it was instantly clear it had to be with no chemical supplements and a 100% cruelty-free vegan product. That means no chemicals 🧪, blood 🩸 , bone 🦴 or fish 🎣 fertilisers. It's vegan, organic and exclusively available through the shop.

The magical ingredient is seaweed, harvested from the Atlantic, which comes with a delicate blend of growth hormones and micronutrients making this a perfect mild fertiliser for your houseplants. Unlike most other fertilisers, it contains naturally occurring growth stimulants for increasing plant health which is ready for uptake (e.g. your plants don't have to break anything down to get all the nutrients).

Seaweed has the broadest range of benefits to plants beyond plant nutrition, along with having the ability to improve resistance to disease, pests and abiotic plant stress. Abiotic stress is the effect of non-living factors on living organisms within an environment. Examples of abiotic stress in plants include hot/cold weather, soil salinity, drought and heavy metals.

The added iron helps your plant to produce better chlorophyll. In other words, it helps to move oxygen throughout the roots, leaves, and other parts of the plant, producing the green colour that lets you know your plant is healthy.

FUNGUS *f-ing* GNATS 😵
I didn’t know what everybody was talking about until I encountered these nasty little buggers myself.

They entered my home when I was away for a couple months while a friend was taking care of my houseplants.

Although they took excellent care, upon arrival I noticed that some of the plants were extremely moist. Being an underwaterer myself it made realise that each person has a different care type and the ways this affects your plants.

So at first I didn’t care much about gnats, as I knew I would let the plants dry out. They were gone for a while but came back so had to take some serious measures which you can read about by ➡️ next. And let me know what has worked well for you!
