Growing up in a small town in Wales, my family life was pretty mixed having grown up in a white household. My mum is half-Chinese and worked at a local takeaway, so she was busy a lot. My connection to our Chinese culture came in bits and pieces, I’d get red packets at New Year, or we’d have glutinous rice parcels stuffed with Chinese sausage - small things that felt special but were hard for me to understand fully back then.
As I got older, though, I started feeling a pull toward understanding more about where I come from. I’ve become fascinated by the details of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese cultures - the architecture, design, the way everything seems so intentional. It’s like discovering parts of myself that I never really looked at before.
That’s how the ROOF lamp idea came about. I wanted to create something that feels like a nod to my heritage, but in my own way. It’s inspired by those traditional oriental roofs—layered, solid, and balanced. It’s personal for me, a way to explore my roots and connect to something bigger… or maybe its just a lamp idk.
