It is hard to overestimate the passion which drove the great 19th century collectors towards the French 'Saint-Porchere' ceramics of 1520-1560.

As mysterious and enigmatic then as now, very little is known of the master potters or even the location of the kiln or kilns.
Astonishingly, the decoration is not painted, as would be expected, but engraved and inlaid with coloured slip clays.

However, we are more secure with the fabulous Minton versions of the Henri Deux style in the hands of Charles Toft in the 1870s.
This Minton version of a ewer sold from the Fountaine collection at Christies in 1884, is an interesting addition to the group in that it is fully documentary. Signed by Toft and Minton and dated 1874.
It has had a life and lost parts of the handle and damage to the foot but still an exquisite object.
