Sumptuously sculptural Finnish designs in glass & silver, reflecting designer Tapio Wirkkala’s skill in achieving the perfect balance between poetry & functionality.

The clear glass vase is an abstract interpretation of a flower before bloom. Specifically, it is modelled on foal’s foot (commonly known as coltsfoot), or ‘Varsanjalka’ in Finnish — a plant that bears a passing resemblance to the dandelion. The finely cut vertical lines running the full length of the glass evoke the many elongated florets & bracts that form the coltsfoot flower.

In a similar vein, the sterling silver bowl, which gently undulates outward from a central, stalk-like carrying handle, references the form of an ivy-like leaf blade. Some discern a heart rather than a leaf, but either reading underscores Wirkkala’s deep fascination with organic forms.

Berndt Friberg ‘Tea Bowl’ w. “Nebula” Glaze.

Friberg’s ceramics for Gustavsberg are some of the most exceptional wheel-thrown pots of the C20th -a world of flawless forms & impossibly detailed glazes that feel utterly alive.

A large Modernist bust of an ancient Greek gentleman by Susan Parkinson C. 1953

Porcelain slip-cast in one piece, complete with tunic, laurel wreath, & column base, Parkinson’s Greek Head (Model No. 67) captures the serene elegance of a noble from antiquity. Yet its true brilliance lies in Parkinson’s rendering. For us, this bust perfectly embodies the spirit & epitomises the aesthetics of post-war British design.

Vase, summer beets & Sunday beats.

A colossal art vase by Francesca Mascitti Lindh for Arabia, Finland, c.1960

~ Longer Sunday Read ~

Mascitti-Lindh joined Arabia in 1955, remaining for 34 years until 1989. Her ceramics are playful yet imposing. For us this majestic tension is achieved by Mascitti-Lindh infusing wholesome rusticity, surprising shapes, & innovative glazes within her work.

Often, rusticity stems from her combining different techniques & clays. Her unexpected forms, that sometimes incorporate multiple spouts, wide brimmed mouths, and bulbous sections, show inspiration from traditional Mediterranean pottery. Whilst her arresting glazes are part of the collective achievements of the Arabia art department that jointly pioneered clashing earthy tones with bright zany colours, especially cobalt blue.

This vase stands at a striking 44 cm, the form is irregular and a medley of two shapes. The main body is a rectangle whilst the neck is cylindrical. The evidently handmade, asymmetric structure commands that your eye properly inspects the vase, as does the luminous glaze. Best described as like the skin of a Mackerel fish the glaze features tiger-like stripes that alternate rhythmically between glossy & matt.

Look who’s just flew in... A rather unusual British bird-shaped vase. Handmade yet accomplished, this unique period Art Deco piece dates from around 1930, and is probably English.
