‘To Find Rest’ - Reveal of final framed piece! Apologies about the reflection but I was trying to capture the luminescence of the pastels when sunlights falls on it. Pastels can take on a whole new shine and glow in sunlight.
Note I am also trying not to fall backwards down a spiral staircase :-)

‘To Find Rest’ - African leopard, pastel on pastel mat. Size: 60 x 40cm.
Sometimes I spend hours (or days or longer ..) searching for a reference photo of my subject, but this time a photo just jumped out at me - a majestic peaceful leopard with a strong unbroken gaze, and with little thought I set about to try and capture its beauty for this piece!

They say eyes are the window to the soul, and that is what I am trying to capture here, the restful but powerful gaze of my subject, an African leopard finding respite in a tree.

Whilst the eyes are green, there are all kinds of colours in there from blues, yellows and greens to greys, browns and black, and even a little purple and tiny flicker of crimson.

It is nerve wracking to add whiskers or other delicate final touches to your almost completed artwork. Over the years I have learnt never to be lazy with sharpening my pencils for this part! What if you make an error at this stage?

It is also best to use bold decisive movements for the whiskers, though you can probably see my hesitation with the first whiskers here :-) Finally always remember even pastel paintings can be adjusted, I wasn’t actually happy with the whiskers here and made various corrections until they looked right

I use pan pastels for the base layer of my pastel pieces, they are fantastic for creating form, i.e. a 3D effect, as well as adding vibrancy and saturated rich colours to your final piece.

You can mix colours on paper, with a variety of “Sofft” tools, use a light thin printer paper for your mixing palette. wildlife
