Artist of the Month: Karolina Stus.

Each month we will be featuring either a commission-based artist or a Red Delicious Cooperative Artist in our newly created front-of-house special spot; a carefully curated mini exhibition of work new to the Gallery.

Our inaugural Artist of the Month is commission-based Kapiti Coast Artist Karolina Stus.

Karolina is a Polish-born award-winning photographer and visual artist. Her creative practice blends photography and handcrafted materials including wood, encaustic wax, natural dyes and ceramics, exploring themes of identity, transformation and human connection.

Her work carries a painterly, tactile quality, where photography meets object and emotion becomes form.

Her awards include:
Master of Photography with Distinction III
NZIPP Creative Photographer of the Year 2025, 2024
Wellington Photographer of the Year 2025
NZIPP Commercial Photographer of the Year 2023
NZIPP Expressive Photographer of the Year 2020

Our next Artist is Marie Lotz.

Marie enjoys a creative life as a visual artist working across drawing, painting and textile practices, integrating embroidery and poetry to explore memory, narrative and expression.

Her work is grounded in an attention to everyday moments, seeking to elevate their quiet significance and evoke a sense of place, like a memory or a poem carried through time. Through layered surfaces, stitching, colour and gesture, she hopes to create works that remain with the viewer long after they have left them behind. Perhaps held in the mind and the heart as fragments of feeling and connection.

With an Advanced Diploma in Art & Creativity (Level 7) from The Learning Connexion, Marie has spent the last five years working as a Creative Kaiaoko, mentoring and teaching art while sharing her passion for creative exploration.

Her work has been exhibited in the Upper Hutt Arts Trail (2023), Fibre Arts Take Two online exhibition: ‘Collections as a Catalyst’ (2024), the Parkin Drawing Prize (2024), the Wellington Visual Art Prize 2025,
‘The Museum of our Childhood Collaboration’ at the library (2025), guest artist at Te Puni Art Gallery (2024), ‘Te Kore, Te Po, Te Ao Marama’ TLC Staff Exhibition 2026, and she is currently with Red Delicious Gallery, Greytown.

Our next Red Delicious Artist is Howie Griffin.
Howie is a potter and an artist specializing in small-scale works that capture intricate detail and quiet emotion. Working primarily in clay, and oils, his sculptures and paintings reflect a deep appreciation for form, texture, and the subtleties of the human and natural world.

With a background in graphic design Howie has exhibited in local galleries and community art events in the Wairarapa and Wellington. Each piece is hand-crafted, often drawing inspiration from everyday moments, memory, and organic shapes.

Howie works from his home studio in Featherston. His paintings are reflective of the environment he lives in, and his small sculptures explore both a personal expression and offer a shared experience.

Our next Red Delicious Artist is Anna Layzell.

Anna draws inspiration from the ever-changing natural environment which surrounds her, as well as from memories of places that form a part of her personal history.

She seeks to evoke a sense of space and calm in her work while exploring quiet - almost meditative - moments in nature. Her work is an invitation to the viewer to reflect on their connection with the natural world. While abstract her work speaks of landscape.

Anna is a mixed media artist working predominantly with oil and cold wax medium. In her printmaking process practice found materials inspire her collagraph printmaking

Our next Red Delicious Artist is Clarke Gregory.

Brought up in Hawke’s Bay and educated in the Wairarapa and Wellington, Clarke was an artist and designer from his earliest days. He followed university with a start in sales, before working as a design assistant to Michael G***k, who ran a design and retail operation as well as a stage and set design practice for film and video production.

This led to advertising agency film work and a stint as agency Art Director before returning to a set designer role in TV and feature film work, culminating in his Senior Set Design role on Lord of the Rings 1998-2001, and several NZ and overseas TV productions (Disney, Hercules)

The design and production of indoor and outdoor spaces for film and events became his forte and this progressed into a Landscape Design practice from 2005 until retirement in 2023.

Clarke has had three solo painting shows at Oedipus Rex Gallery, and continues to enjoy painting, sculpture and landscape art in many forms. He has recently added photography to his repertoire.

His paintings are thoughtful, even a little wistful, but always with the promise of hope just beyond the horizon.

Our next Red Delicious Artist is Philothera Flynn.
Of Ngati Porou, Ngati Kahungunu, European, and Australian whakapapa this Eastborne-based artist began her jewellery journey in Ubud, Bali in 2017. Following a significant health scare, she turned to creating jewellery as a vital source of healing and creative focus.

Learning from local and international experts, her work is deeply inspired by the natural world and the endless curiousity of the making process. For Philothea, jewellery is more than an accessory for herself and others. It is a way to celebrate life, adorn and appreciate the body, and express a profound gratitude for life through the creation and gifting of jewellery.

Our next Red Delicious Artist is Jane Tan.

She is a Scottish born artist currently living on the Brontë Peninsula, Tasman, New Zealand.
Mainly self taught she has also attended the independent Brown School of Art in Auckland for four years of studio practice and mentoring.

She works in Contemporary Drawing and Painting, driven by a deep instinctive need to create. Her practice is experiential - a way of processing and recording emotion through visual language.

Drawing and painting is how she connects with herself, with others and with the world around her. They allow her to communicate on both a physical and spiritual level, often navigating the space between the conscious and subconscious.

Each piece becomes a record - a reflection of memory, feeling, and connection in the present moment.

She has been a finalist in the Molly Morpeth Art Awards and twice selected as a finalist for the Parkin Drawing Prize.
