🌟KILO has submitted a planning application for the modernisation and improvement of the locally listed chapel at Cottage Green, on behalf of The Well Church in South East London.

The proposal outlines a sensitive and future-focused transformation of this redundant chapel into a multi-purpose community hub, supporting both church activities and wider community use.

The vision is to create:

👉 An accessible, welcoming space for local residents
👉 A community hospitality area
👉 A supportive environment for community start-ups and grassroots initiatives
👉 A flexible venue for gatherings, creativity, and collaboration

This marks an exciting step in renewing a much-loved building for contemporary community life.

đź’«We look forward to engaging with partners, neighbours, and stakeholders as the project progresses and as the church fundraises for the next phase of the project.

When creativity is integrated into public buildings, it sparks curiosity, invites engagement and, often without us realising, communicates a simple message of welcome.

At The Well Church, an underutilised reception space has been reimagined as the “Tiny Gallery”: a new exhibition space in the entrance foyer dedicated to showcasing work by local artists and students from nearby art schools, including Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, University of the Arts London, and Goldsmiths, University of London.

We have supported this initiative as a meaningful and creative way for the church to engage with emerging artists and the local creative community.

The Tiny Gallery launched on 10th January with work by Lizzie Harnden, an interdisciplinary artist working across sculpture, printmaking, photography, and video.

We wish the Tiny Gallery every success!

We are excited to focus on new projects in 2026 that seek to create community hubs and deliver affordable social housing.

To support churches in realising their vision, we have added a new section to our website outlining services designed to guide projects from initial concept through to the completion of new or refurbished premises.

We hope this resource will help churches build thriving communities while also creating opportunities for sensitive, mixed-use development that can attract external funding.

Kilo’s services include supporting churches with community consultation, fundraising, the preparation of design appraisals, the creation of welcoming and flexible spaces, building condition surveys, and the production of heritage reports.

Please contact us if you would like to discuss how we can help support your project.

How Churches Can Shape the UK's Social Housing Future

Churches have long been pillars of the community, and their role in addressing social issues is as crucial now as ever. In the face of the UK’s ongoing housing crisis, faith-based organisations are uniquely positioned to facilitate and participate in meaningful community consultation.

This article describes how a church in South East London has utilised its land, resources, and community connections to play a proactive role in addressing the issue of affordable housing.

Read on to learn how KILO collaborated with The Bear Church to redevelop an underused church site.

Heritage Meets Housing: KILO strengthens its expertise in faith-based housing and regeneration

We’re thrilled to welcome Lisa Brooks from Brooks Building Consultants Ltd to the KILO team as a consultant conservation surveyor!

Lisa is a Fellow of the RICS with over 30 years of experience and a specialist in historic building conservation. As an RICS certified historic building professional and a Full Member of the The Institute Of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), she brings a wealth of expertise: from delicate repairs to ÂŁ35M regeneration projects across housing, education, commercial, and heritage sectors.

She also serves on the Rochester Diocesan Advisory Committee, advising churches and the Chancellor on DAC proposals, and is a Quinquennial Surveyor for the Dioceses of Rochester and Canterbury. Lisa’s work is grounded in a deep respect for heritage and a strong commitment to professional integrity, ensuring that conservation priorities, statutory responsibilities, and the long-term significance of historic buildings are upheld throughout every project.

At KILO, we’ve long supported churches and faith spaces. Many of them are listed or rich in heritage value. Lisa’s arrival strengthens our ability to serve these buildings with care, insight, and technical rigour. She’ll be leading conservation surveys and preparing Statements of Significance, helping us offer even more sensitive, informed guidance to our clients.

We believe church buildings should continue to thrive, serving the communities they were built for, while evolving to meet today’s needs. That might mean integrating affordable housing, performance spaces, nurseries, social supermarkets, coworking spaces, or areas for community activity.

These kinds of adaptations help ensure historic buildings remain open, relevant, and active throughout the week.

Our goal is to give these spaces renewed purpose: honouring their heritage while unlocking new possibilities for the future.

Welcome aboard, Lisa Brooks. We’re so glad you’ve joined us!

âś… The wait is over: Phase 2 has the green light!

Rye Lane Chapel Phase 2 is officially moving forward, and we couldn’t be happier. 🎉

It’s been a long journey reimagining this beautiful 1950s–60s Scandinavian-style building, bringing it into the 21st century while preserving its original charm.

✨ The iconic majestic window will remain a striking feature, while a new welcoming, accessible reception will help the church meet its growing needs and vision for the future.

Next stop: construction on site! We can’t wait to see it come to life!
