A Hagi Ware Guinomi (萩焼ぐい呑) by Yamato Yasuo (born 1933), one of Japan’s most respected masters of contemporary Hagi ceramics.

This small sake cup embodies the quiet beauty and wabi-sabi sensibility that define Hagi ware. Its softly irregular form and gently undulating rim reflect the hand of the maker, where subtle asymmetry becomes part of the aesthetic language rather than a flaw.

The surface is enveloped in a creamy white glaze, enriched by a delicate web of crackles formed during firing. Soft tones of blush pink, warm beige, and pale grey emerge naturally through the glaze, while the exposed iron-rich clay at the foot anchors the piece with earthy contrast.

Hagi ware is known for its evolving beauty over time, gradually absorbing use and memory. This guinomi carries that living potential, while reflecting Yamato Yasuo’s long-standing contribution to the evolution of modern Hagi ceramics.

Accompanied by its original tomobako.

A Jun Ware Style Sake Flask (均窯徳利) by Miura Koheiji (1933–2006).

Among the most influential Japanese porcelain artists of the twentieth century, Miura Koheiji devoted much of his career to exploring the beauty of historic Chinese celadon and Jun ware ceramics. This elegant tokkuri embodies that lifelong pursuit.

The pear-shaped form is covered in a luminous celadon-blue glaze, animated by a soft cascade of violet-purple tones flowing naturally down the body. The subtle transitions between blue and lavender create a surface of remarkable depth and quiet sophistication, while the exposed iron-rich foot provides a striking contrast to the ethereal glaze above.

Balancing technical mastery with refined restraint, Miura transformed the legacy of Song dynasty ceramics into a distinctly modern Japanese expression. Works such as this reveal why he was designated a Living National Treasure for Celadon Porcelain in 1997.

Accompanied by its original signed tomobako.

A Jun Ware Style Celadon Sake Cup (均窯盃) by Miura Koheiji (1933–2006), designated a Living National Treasure for Celadon Porcelain in 1997.

Bathed in a luminous celadon glaze, this elegant sake cup displays delicate transitions between pale blue, lavender, and soft violet tones, recalling the celebrated Jun ware ceramics of the Song dynasty. The subtle colour variations emerge naturally from Koheiji’s masterful control of glaze chemistry and firing, creating a surface that appears both serene and deeply expressive.

Throughout his career, Miura Koheiji pursued the beauty of historic Chinese ceramics while forging a distinctly modern Japanese aesthetic. This small vessel encapsulates that achievement—quietly refined, technically sophisticated, and endlessly rewarding to contemplate.

Accompanied by its original signed tomobako.

Asahi ware is known for refined surfaces shaped through subtle glaze and brushwork techniques. Benikase glaze introduces soft reddish tones, while hakeme brushwork creates fluid movement across the clay surface. Explore vessels where restrained decoration and material sensitivity define the character of the piece.

A Hagi ware guinomi titled “Kin no Shizuku” (金のしずく) by Miwa Kyusetsu XIII.

A compact vessel that balances restraint and drama — soft milky Hagi glaze enveloping the form, interrupted by a striking gilded clay element that seems to emerge and flow from the surface like a frozen drop of gold.

Created during the artist’s earlier period as Miwa Kazuhiko, this work reflects a pivotal moment in his practice, where traditional Hagi ware is reimagined through a sculptural, contemporary lens. The simplicity of the form allows texture, material, and light to take centre stage.

Equally contemplative as a sake cup or as a small sculptural object, it embodies the quiet tension between tradition and experimentation that defines modern Miwa kiln ceramics.

6.9 × 7.8 × 7.3 cm
