Details matter… Are they just ‘cushions’ or is it the difference between an uncomfortable sit that leads to an early departure or a long, lingering dinner with your bestie - extra laughter, extra precious time together.

Are they just ‘cushions’ or is that a fabric you have had pinned for years that makes you feel like you’ve arrived to have it in your home?

We never just do ‘cushions’…

🌸🌷☀️ Spring is in the air☀️🌷🌸

Finally some sunshine after the weeks or rain and gloom. Time to bring a little bouquet in to the house to celebrate. (Although I’ve got the garden doors open and it’s not quite warm enough…). Hope you’re having a sunny day.

🎉💙Introducing the bold island 💙🎉

Sometimes you want colour in the kitchen but you don’t want it everywhere. Let me introduce you to the bold island, your new best friend.

The bold island injects lovely colour (here cobalt with fresh turquoise) and pattern (warm, colourful terrazzo top) in an otherwise pulled back kitchen.

It’s functional - of course! - as well as beautiful. Providing prep, cooking, seating as well as show off cook book storage.

What do you think, could it work for you?

Planning a kitchen? here are our top tips

1 Start with a List 📝

Before worrying about style or layout, grab a pencil ✏️ and make a list with anyone else who will be using the kitchen:

😍 Things you love in your current kitchen
☺️ Must-haves (coffee corner, crockery storage, champagne coupes within reach 🍾)
🤯 Things you hate

Voilà! Your kitchen wishlist is born 🤩

2 Now you can think about style

Set a 30 min timer ⏰, grab Instagram & Pinterest, and start saving pics you love. Don’t overthink it — just save what catches your eye! When time’s up, go back and check for duplicates (clients ALWAYS pin the same kitchen more than once 😅).

✨ That’s your style showing through!
Pair those similar pics together, and voilà — your design concept is born! 💡

3 Floorplans! 📐

Measure your space and draw it out — doors, windows, obstacles.

🔑 The secret? The work triangle — hob, sink, fridge.
Place the fridge first, then oven, then sink. Draw worktops around them (60cm depth, 1–1.2m between runs).

🧑‍🍳 Think about busy areas (prep, coffee, dishwasher) — don’t block doors or tables!

Plan emerging? Check ✅

4 Lighting 💡

Different levels for different moods:
✨ Task lighting for cooking/washing
💛 Softer lighting for evening + dining

Favourites: under-cabinet lights, dimmable pendants, angled spotlights, maybe a small table lamp 🕯️

Odd numbers rule = 1/3/5 pendants (or 2 spaced well)

5 Worktops 🪵🪨

Quartz/Stone: durable, cool, low maintenance
Wood: natural, soft, bread-making heaven
Acrylic: warm, durable, knife-friendly
Porcelain: bomb proof, pricey (and check you like the edging)

Order samples, compare with tiles, paint, cabinets, fabrics. Go with your ❤️!

Now you’re ready to hit the showrooms with confidence. But if it feels overwhelming 😅 Don’t worry — we have a full kitchen service to take you from confused → cooking in your dream kitchen 🍳✨

Hi, I’m Mia — interior designer and founder of House By Mia 🤍

We create beautiful, considered spaces for everyday living.

Kitchen & Bath Design 🛁
Space Planning 📐
Furniture & Accessories 🛋️
Full Project Support through the build 🏗️
Art Selection 🖼️
And much more… ✨

House By Mia began back in the early 2010s on a sunny day in Whitstable, browsing lampshades with my oldest friend. She turned to me and said, “If you were an interior designer, you could do this all the time.”
And just like that… 💥

Years of corporate design experience, an MA from Greenwich School of Architecture, pop-up art galleries and food-writing adventures all came together — and House By Mia was born.

In 2017, after completing my interior design training, that same friend trusted me to design her home (it’s still on our website — can you spot it?). From there, we were off.

Fast forward a few years and it became clear I couldn’t — and shouldn’t — do it alone. To truly serve our clients, I needed a partner who could run projects seamlessly while I focused on clients and design.

Enter Lisa ✨
My friend of 25 years, with a degree in 3D Design from Brighton University, work sold to the Royal Academy, collaborations with Tom Dixon, and 20 years of project management experience. Process is her superpower.

Since she joined in 2021, we’ve gone from strength to strength.

We blend London–Paris design flair with Geordie powerhouse strength, marrying elevated aesthetics with hands-on project expertise. We don’t just create beautiful spaces - we ensure they’re delivered seamlessly, efficiently, and stress-free.

We’re also working parents, so we truly understand real life — and we’re here to take the pressure off.

Like a swan on the water 🦢
Calm, elegant design above the surface — a powerful, organised build team beneath it.

Pretty in pink.

It’s one of my favourite colours for a bedroom, so warm and relaxing. Here we’ve run the theme into a Moroccan/Indian fusion inspired ensuite (the client loves to travel). We used the softest pink in the bedroom adding Jaipur pink and terracotta in the ensuite and finishing on the client’s own fuchsia curtains brought home from a trip to India.

There’s even a little pink utility closet tucked in before the bathroom!

Mylands - Kensington rose
Paint and Paper Library - Jaipur Pink
Porcelain Superstore - Croft Cotto tiles
