Why do we decorate bathrooms like they’re purely functional?
It’s the first room we use in the morning and the last at night, yet this room is so often neglected and has the least atmosphere. I treat mine like any other room adding a pendant (purely decorative, non electrified) something soft, softly woven towels, a portable lamp for a soft glow – and then suddenly the room feels so good to be in!

Layering is one of the most important components in the decorating puzzle. How to do it? Add in texture, lighting, accessories, botanicals and soft furnishings and watch how this creates absolute magic. You can make any room awaken all the senses and feel truly show-stopping when you engage in storytelling and add layers. Trust me!

Why friction-maxxing is the secret ingredient your home has been missing.
Friction is what happens when you put something sleek against something rough, something oversized next to something small, something polished beside something beautifully imperfect. That little bit of tension is what stops a room feeling flat or overly coordinated and creates absolute magic!

How to Layer Rugs Successfully.

I recently put out a post talking about layering rugs in my bedroom, and I had a lots of messages asking how to do it! So here’s the lowdown.

Use rugs as a highlight.
Layering a smaller rug over a bigger rug adds an immediate highlight, a definition if you like to any area. Sometimes enormous floating rugs can sap the energy in a space, layering a smaller rug on top brings the emphasis back into the room. Same applies if you have wall-to-wall carpeting especially if it’s in a solid hue. Float a smaller patterned rug on top and magic happens.

Add an extra spot of warmth.
A small sheepskin in the corner or at the end of the bed adds a cosy additional layer. Suddenly your space comes alive, feels more sumptuous, textured and cool all by plonking a sheepskin on top of a rug.

Add contrasting textures.
The trick when you are layering rugs is to not match your weaves. So you would want something a bit more wooly and slubby and lux over jute say. Conversely put a shaggy rug over a flat weave so you get this really interesting intermingling of textures and weaves, slubby and flat.

Smaller rugs help out the budget.
Finding a huge rug that fits the whole floor is not only costly but time consuming. I find rugs one of the hardest things to buy especially large ones so a trick I use quite often it to butt up quite a few small ones together which cuts the budget in half whilst giving me the rug coverage I need!

Breaking up a solid.
When you select rugs try and steer clear from two many solidly hued ones.
You don’t really want to layer or butt up a solid against another solid block of colour. Opt instead for a good shot of pattern however subtle that may be. I’ve got the subtlest pattern going on in all my rugs but it makes the floors look so much cooler. Promise!

The first thing I change before autumn arrives isn’t the cushions, the candles or the accessories. It’s the rug. A deeper, more textural rug changes the whole temperature of a room — suddenly everything feels more grounded, more cocooning, more layered.

AA Tip: Never worry if a rug isn't quite large enough. I often double up on rugs, placing them next to or near each other to create a more generous footprint. It's one of the simplest ways to transform a space!

Your coffee table tells me more about your personality than you think!
A wooden or resin table lends a laidback air to a space, whereas marble or glass reads as a little bit more polished and formal. The objects you place on it speak volumes too. Looking at mine, you can tell I love earthy, beautiful colours connected to the landscape, playful little accents, and I am a little bit obsessed with botanicals. It is really interesting if you start drilling down... So what does your coffee table say about you?

The best rooms aren’t just aesthetic – they’re atmospheric, cocooning and dramatic. If you feel like your space is missing something, stand back and take note of the colours, lighting and textures. Do you need to add in some warmer tones, extra lamps or cosy softs? Remember, a room needs all three of these to set the mood, so up the cosy I say!

How to Style a Side Table The AA Way.

A side table might be a practical essential, but it can also pack a serious design punch. Every sofa, accent chair and bedside needs a beautiful landing spot for books, phones, drinks and those little everyday essentials. But don’t underestimate this small but mighty piece of furniture when it comes to making a stylish statement.

Here are some of our favourite ways to make the most of your side tables.

Find the right spot.
Nestle a side table alongside an accent chair or sofa, beside the bed, in an alcove or even in an unused corner. Contrasting shapes — organic and round alongside more angular forms — can add character and create a more eclectic feel.

Add height.
Living spaces are often full of long, low lines, so adding vertical elements is key. Place side tables at either end of a sofa to house table lamps and create different levels. They don’t need to match — mixing proportions and heights creates a much more interesting skyline.

Think outside the bedside box.
Who says bedside tables have to match? Try a chest of drawers, console table, concrete side table or even a small desk. Mismatched bedside furniture can add personality and make a bedroom feel far more considered.

Mix up your materials.
Texture is one of the most important elements of a room, and you can never really have too much of it. Combine contrasting materials and colours — think a concrete table against a wooden wall, a shiny tray and plenty of soft, tactile textiles.

Don't forget the bathroom.
A small side table next to the bath can create a spa-like feel while providing somewhere to keep your essentials, a scented candle or a glass of something special. Add a faux plant for another layer of height and a hit of greenery.

Make it a focal point.
Side tables can be so much more than somewhere to put your coffee. Sculptural forms, beautiful woodgrain and veined marble can create visual interest and anchor a space without overpowering it.

Take them outside.
Side tables aren't just for indoors. Their smaller size makes them easy to move around, so why not bring one into the garden when the weather allows? Or choose a weather-resistant design that can stay outside.
Small in size, big on style. The humble side table might just be one of the most versatile pieces in your home.
