From the Source: Flooring with Encore Reclamation
Are you a carpet person or a floorboard person? And when is it better to restore what’s already there rather than replace it completely? Personally I’m a floorboard person.
Restoring floorboards can cost a third of replacement, keep original character (especially in Victorian homes, which is one in four in East London) and cause less disruption if you’re living through the works.
Replacement opens up choices like engineered wood or reclaimed parquet — but at higher cost and upheaval.
In my reuse project I uncovered a very typical 1970s mix - old floorboards, manky carpet, asbestos tiles and vinyl. While my aim is to reuse as much as possible, some things had to go - rotting carpet and toxic tiles to be precise. A win however, was finding perfectly good floorboards hidden under the carpet but unfortunately only in the living room.
My challenge was working out how to match the discovered wooden flooring with a similar material throughout the space. This is where working with trusted suppliers mattered. Encore Reclamation are specialists in reclaimed timber flooring, sourcing boards with real character. They’ve supplied projects as diverse as Turner Contemporary Gallery and Boxpark Shoreditch.
The reclaimed flooring (a sustainable reuse choice) Aldo and his team supplied was a great to match the existing pine.
