A huge, beautiful and carefully crafted Aesthetic movement chest of drawers from London makers Maple & Co.

Maple & Co. were one of the great names in British furniture and interior decoration, with a history stretching back to 1841. The firm grew from a London furnishing business into a vast operation incorporating cabinet-making, upholstery, timber importing and interior decoration, with showrooms and workshops on Tottenham Court Road.

Their prestigious commissions included the furnishing of White Lodge in Richmond Park in 1870, which was then the home of Francis, Prince of Teck and Princess Mary Adelaide.

Today, our own shop is just a short distance from Richmond Park, making this connection particularly fitting — a piece made by the same celebrated London firm that furnished one of the Park’s most important historic residences.

This detail is even more special as our shop was originally a chemist. Queen Victoria used to stop at Mortlake Station (opposite our shop) and was then transported to Richmond Park by horse and carriage. Her porters using the mirror on the outside of our shop to adjust their suits. The whole shops original internal contents are now housed inside one of the lodges in Richmond Park.

As with most of London there is a fascinating story around every corner!

An exceptional and rare highly individual writing desk by Sidney Howard Barnsley (1865–1926), one of the foremost makers of the Cotswold School and a central figure in the British Arts & Crafts movement.

Executed in 1909 as a bespoke commission, this remarkable desk is constructed in richly figured walnut, distinguished by an extensive scheme of geometric chequered inlay and an elegant, architectural form.

A gift from a wealthy family to their son for his 21st birthday present, who attended Cambridge university and moved in the same circles as the arts & crafts pioneers of the time.

Measuring: 75cm high x 135cm wide x 71cm deep.

Beautifully restrained & oh so perfectly designed. If you had to ask us why we love the arts & crafts period so much this sort of piece plays a very good role of how we’d sum it up. In our opinion, one of the most beautiful settles we’ve ever seen, never mind owned.

A late 19th century Arts & Crafts “Sussex” settee bench attributed to Ford Maddox Brown (1821-1893) for Morris & Co.

Ring turned beech wood with later rope seat.

English circa 1860-70.

More wonderful work from the portfolio we recently acquired of artist Stefani Melton Fisher (1894-1963).

Stefani Melton Fisher studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools before exhibiting at the Royal Academy and representing Britain at the 1926 Venice Biennale.
Best known for his sensitive animal studies, his work demonstrates an exceptional understanding of anatomy, movement and character.

We will have a selection from our website to view at the Decorative Fair on our stand, E08.
