A beautiful late 19th C ebonised “Sussex” corner chair with drop in rush seat by Ford Madox Brown for Morris & Co.

What’s interesting is that with the huge popularity of “Sussex” furniture (and such wonderful craftsmanship) by both Morris & Co and Liberty’s Argyll range it didn’t take long before other companies such as Maple & Co were “copying” these designs.

The Maple & Co “Stamford” corner chair, no 816 c in their catalogue, is virtually identical. With very subtle tweaks and copyright design laws not what they are today, what was popular was quickly reproduced for the more mass markets and craftsmanships quickly outsourced in nearby counties like Buckinghamshire to keep up with commercial demand.

We’ve added a picture from the Maple & Co catalogue to our story demonstrate the above & we look forwards to bringing this lovely chair to the Decorative Fair in a few weeks time!

An exceptional mid-18th century English yew-wood tripod table. The snap-top having a boldly moulded and reeded edge above a finely turned and ring-turned burr yew column, raised on three elegantly swept cabriole legs terminating in characteristic burr yew pad feet.

English, circa 1740-60.

From a the private collection of private estate on the Welsh borders, held for 20+ years and bought in London. It’s now back in London with us and will be on display at the next Decorative Fair

A very charming diminutive Welsh love spoon. Carved from a single piece of timber and sealed with red wax.

These wonderful pieces of folk art were originally given like love letters, with the carved decorations having various meanings. This example has been decorated with a central heart symbolising love and commitment, a wheel to symbolise eternity and quatrefoil leaves symbolising soul.

Probably late 19th century and will be available to view on our stand at the Decorative Fair in a few weeks!

You certainly don’t see this kind of Welsh blanket every day. A very scarce indeed “leeks and daffodils” pattern double sided blanket from the late 19th / early 20th century. Acquired very recently on a buying trip on the beautiful coast of North Wales.

“The best Howard chair I’ve ever seen” was the phone call we received from our wonderful upholsterer the moment he was in receipt of it.

This specific model differs subtly from the standard catalogue Bridgewater chair, suggesting it may have been made as an early variation or bespoke commission. Its elegant proportions, turned legs, deep feather filled seat and beautifully shaped arms combine everything for which Howard & Sons became renowned.

Provenance: Privately owned by John Fowler (of Colefax & Fowler) before being sold through Christie’s during the early 2000s.

A handful of wildlife drawings from a collection by Stefani Melton Fisher (1894–1963) the British painter, draughtsman and wood engraver. He studied at the Byam Shaw and Vicat Cole School of Art before continuing his training at the Royal Academy Schools, later returning to teach at Byam Shaw. He exhibited throughout the early twentieth century, including at the Royal Academy and as part of the British section at the 1926 Venice Biennale.

New arrival:

Only the second blanket of this design we’ve come across and have now been fortunate enough to own both. One in our private collection and this one we acquired a couple of days ago.

Circa 1890-1910, a rare “sunflower” design double sided Welsh woollen blanket. Wonderful muted colours, thick heavy wool and a rare piece of Welsh history.

Hugh Birkett (1919-2002.

We are in love with this oak sideboard and its chip carved banding to the top, four panelled doors, with turned handles enclosing shelves and four brass ring pulled drawers. It is signed and dated.

Hugh Birkett was one of the 20th century’s best Cotswold School and arts and crafts inspired furniture makers, his work strongly influenced by icons of the Arts & Crafts furniture world like Ernest Gimson & Edward Barnsley. He created traditionally crafted clocks, cabinets, furniture & was also a book binder.

The majority of Birketts work, including this, were bespoke commissioned pieces for churches or private clients and he steered clear of commercial production.
