CHARLSTON GARDEN IN JULY

Had the loveliest day doing their 1 day gardening workshop with Harry Hoblyn learning the art of rambling borders and clever, sequential planting. Plus a private tour of the house I never grow tired of looking at.

Every time I come here I notice something new — a texture, textile or time-stamped piece of Bloomsbury history, preserved with so much care and love by the team there.

The garden was laced with lolling Hollyhocks and dancing Dahlias. I also learned (late in life) how to plant and grow from clippings. The Gardening Year 1-day course costs £150 and takes place 3-4 times per year.

⛴️ Blues? By the coast? Groundbreaking…
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I tried with all my might to be anti-blue with the new house. The place was caked it in when we viewed it and I thought it was just so obvious.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But the more sample pots I bought, tried and denied, the more I kept coming back to shades of the sea.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the end, I’ve used it quite sparingly (I’ll show you soon—still awaiting some furniture) in the lounge and hallway. I’ve tried to darken it though, by opting for something more sultry, and paired it with dark brown and red.

LA LA LAAAA DOLCE VITA!

I weirdly like planning holidays on Christmas Day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One for the wish list: a trip aboard the Orient Express’s ravishing new train, La Dolce Vita. There are several different routes offered- including a jaunt from Rome to Sicily for around €5k per person for 3 days and two nights.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Designed by DimoreStudio and launching in spring, it’s the train is a veritable eye seducer. It showcases a modern lens on a specifically Italian mode of timelessness: the palette and lines honour the 1970s design greats of Giò Ponti and Nanda Vigo. A palette of muddy browns, blues and burgundy’s presides.

HAIL HASTINGAS!

We bought a house! Detached! It’s got actual stairs and everything. Our first stairs in fact. Aged 43. What a time to be alive 🤪
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Location: Hastings, East Sussex.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We started visiting Hastings in the early 2000s on day trips, usually after a blustery walk on Camber sands. We loved it immediately- seaside properties, antique stores aplenty, history in every brick and just enough edge to feel like you are still amongst people with diverse ways of thinking.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Old Town, with its narrow, rambling “twittens” and elevated sides providing epic vistas over the English Channel, was our goal location. After 6 months of searching, there she was. A little 19th century fisherman’s cottage beneath West Hill. There since 1832. Ours.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The placename derives from an Old English personal name Hǣsta + the Old English groupname suffix -ingas. So that’s us now, Hastingas. Wish us luck!

Memories from Charleston.

We recently moved to East Sussex. I have lots to reveal! Projects overload. But first, some scheme dreaming.

Charleston always remains in my thoughts when I come to plan any room. The clattering contrast of colours. The endless surface decoration. The story behind every little object.

HOUSE MADE HOME 🇲🇽

As the weather turns, it’s time to dream of winter summers. Today’s reverie: MESóN HIDALGO in the historic San Antonio de Allende, Mexico —the personal guesthouse by artist Laura Kirar.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Today’s guesthouse is like a giant canvas for creative expression, and Laura’s creation is a richly layered and colourful mural. The former Manor House dates from 1683 and was reopened in 2019 as a new type of experiential hotel crafted by four women-led local brands — a perfumer, silversmith, a clothier and a designer. Along with 3 guest rooms it hosts several carefully curated boutiques, so there’s plenty of charm on which to focus your attention.

Book Chana, the largest of the guest rooms (shown as the ficus here) with 18ft high ceilings and porthole windows. And don’t miss La Calaca, a store brimming with local crafts, pottery and rare antiques🌵

I recently went on a bit of a ‘clay date’ with my beloved friend in the Lake District. Head to stories to see his enviable collection of pottery gleaned from all over the U.K. and Europe - now centre stage in his beautiful and bucolic country home.

SMITTEN IN SIFNOS. Returning from The Cyclades.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just back. Miss it already. Lacking in any of the ponce or pretension if it’s sister island Mykonos, is quiet, gentle and memorable. With 365 churches adorning every hill, cliff and corner, each vista offers a visual ode to the region.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The lack of any noticeable influencers posing in thong bikinis in front of ancient monuments was particularly refreshing. Go before they get here. My highlights:

Go Potty.
An abundance of high quality clay is to thank for the scene in Sifnos and a mix of both traditional and modern aesthetics can be found in the hub of Artemonas to the east, near .
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Two studios worth a mention:
1: Sifnos Stoneware creates a stunning lichen-like glaze effect they call crystalline. Unbelievable.
2: The primitive hand-painted designs at Lembesis near the police station really had me reaching for the Visa. Childlike birds, crabs and fish adorn platters and bowls in a lovely mix of blues, whites and reds - all at really reasonable prices.

Cantina
Nestled into the cliff side of the ancient port of Kastro - it’s hard to explain in a caption why this restaurant is just so perfect. Recent press have made getting a table at this low-key, high-taste destination more difficult that it used to but it’s worth the hassle to pre-plan. Chef Griogos Samoilis does not disappoint.

Loggia Wine Bar
Rumour has it this impromptu drinking hole was started by a idle band in the midst of a never ending pandemic. Loggia has views to make you woozy and a wine list to make you weep. Natural and organic wines are sipped against a backdrop of whitewashed stairs and

NOS
A new style on the north of the island, might just beckon the style hunters (it lacked some personality in my view) but look out for the ensuing hashtaggery
