In all years, I have been visiting Clerkenwell Design week the street installations have been rarely memorable, well crafted or innovative. They have been as bad as the quality of the show.. "more noise than substance" one may say. Finally there is an installation that appeals to the eyes and the brain and with an assertive use of materials designed by One Bite Design Studio using Leigei Stone

Accessories are a vital part in the creation of a beautiful home and those that honour craftsmanship are certainly at the top of the list. The London Craft Week is a great way to discover new objects and techniques. Here is my experience this year.

Antiques or Vintage pieces can have that quality in design and/or in character that makes a room particularly distintive either because it complements the scheme so well or because it becomes the piece around which the scheme is built. At the Decorative Art Fair I found pieces that inspired both approaches from mid twenty century panels to Chinise wall paper, ceramics and beautifully crafted art nouveau objects. Here some of them

Interesting talk on Scandinavian design led by: a 150-year brand representative, the senior designer of a contemporay brand, a Scandinavian company with European ethos and a contemporary designer.

My take on their presentation is that Scandinavian design is living thanks to the fame of their masters. They have not been able to produce contemporary design that is worthy, innovative, and beautiful. All at the same time.

They are walking in the shadows of those giants trying to jystify their lacks with words like  minimal, mindset, tradtidion but if we see companies like Muuto and Norman Copenhagen there is not innovation at all, for sure no in aesthetic terms. There is just clever capitalisation  of their heriage without the quality of detail and the beauty.

My question to them was how to break that pattern? How can they innovate? The answer of one of them was: "it is very difficult to innovate in aesthetics." My thought then was..if your ancestors did it why current designers are proving incapable of repeating that ? Laziness? Is the weight too much? Greed?

That is why when talking about the proper Scandinavian design, we have to go back to the classics. There is where it is.

The first edition of the House and Garden Craft Prize was presented

Such a disappointment. The curatorial intentionality of closing the gap between art and craft was just a political statement with zero reflection on the works presented.

With predominantly low quality and repetitive outcomes we have seen in fairs again and again , lus a selection of  some of the winners that seems to eco political aligments, the show is a fiasco.

There aareno more of five  participants that show potential among them Oliver Spendley (who won the prize), Robert Radcliffe  and Max Bainbridge. The first two are very young in their careers. Ash and Plumb one of the established, mature makers of the group.

This is an award about craft, and in that sense, it should award excellence in craftsmanship. The additional idea of recognising  it as art at the same level  failed dramatically.

Another unnecessary award. Let's hope the second edition has some integrity.

Interesting talk regarding AI and Sustainability. AI is here to stay, and it will be an instrument of change. If for good or bad, it will depend on those of us operating and using it. Lovely products displays.

The is a place for me predominantly for fabrics, wallpapares and trimmings. And is absolutely wonderful in that. However, their management has not been able to change or expand that perception with their very stiff and almost arrogant view of design. The temporary show at the "Avenue" is so uninspiring and average that is off putting. But that is always the case. I want to see top quality and beautiful, innocative creativity in those stands. The general look is either "aspirational" Chelsea or Posh Chelsea. Nothing else. And there is so much more. Changes have to happen. The directive has to go and dedicate their lives to gardening or macrame. They lost the appetite for design and creativity. They are in their bubble of comfort. The Design Emporium initiative has a great name but not sure is a concept for the Harbour. The bombastic name is too much as not endorsed by reality. Anyway, I always find wonderful fabrics and wallpapers so there is beauty to be found.
