We pick up the Reed story with the sons of Amos Hargreaves Reed; William and Tom. After amassing enough capital from weaving alongside their father the two ambitious brothers embarked on building one of the largest mills in the world at the time - Springfield Mill in Nelson - set over three floors. The ground floor occupied by William Reed Weaving housed 748 shuttle looms in 1891. William’s foresight, industriousness and exacting standards soon made him one of Nelson’s first millionaires.

Our story begins with ‘Grandpa Hargreaves Reed’ - the unknowing founder of a great British sheeting company. A Lancashire sheep farmer who tried his hand at weaving after meeting a Liverpool cotton agent. He, his wife and sons soon outgrew their ‘weaving shed’ and started what was to become one of the largest weaving dynasties in Britain. And we are still thriving today!
