Creating more than just a souvenir.

🌍 I started my business as I wanted to bring home the feeling of different destinations through art. The best travel stories, sitting right on our walls, creating a moment to escape into every day. From the tiny gardens that fill the City of London to the colourful neighbourhoods of Singapore, I’m sharing the 10 places that shaped my art over the last decade on my blog.

🏙️ 10 years. 10 destinations. And millions of memories in between! Swipe through for the first 5:

London: strolling along South Bank, where there’s always something new to discover, and the architectural contrasts in the City of London

Canary Islands: curving coves, sparkling turquoise waters and otherworldly landscapes to mesmerising sunrises and sunsets

Vancouver: seeing every type of landscape whilst wandering Stanley Park to ‘hidden’ art in unexpected places

Singapore: the serenity of beautiful gardens within the city, to colourful neighbourhoods

Sydney: the iconic architecture of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, to the gorgeous beaches and towns along the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk.

Which of these spots have you been to? Are any on your "someday" list?

Ten years, sooooo many colours mixed, and a world of hues.

🎨 To celebrate a decade of South Island Art, I’ve been curating a retrospective of the colours that have defined both global trends and my own art. The "Colours of the Year", defined by interior paint brands versus the bright, dominant hues that naturally emerged from my travels.

See the patterns in my new blog post:

For a quick glance, swipe through the photos - big brand colours are at the top, my main art colours at the bottom.

Hello & welcome! This space is for sharing a love of all things colourful, art and travel-related.

I’m Rowana, and I create travel-inspired art for the quietly adventurous.

🖼️ My art explores the threads that connect us to the places we love. It’s made to help us create homes that feel like sanctuaries. A place where a single piece can transport you back to a sun-drenched wedding morning or a winding alleyway from a favourite holiday.

🖌️ I love stories in all forms, whether through journaling, reading, puzzles, or films.

My way of storytelling is through painting and illustration. I create pieces that bring joy, whether they hang on your wall or sit on your table. You can gaze at them and reflect on a memory, dream about somewhere new or enjoy just where you are right now. Whether you want a statement piece that changes a room or a memorable souvenir, I've got something for you.

🎨 My work is Architectural, Escapist, and Kaleidoscopic —designed to bring that escapist feel into the quiet corners of your daily life.

A few things about my pieces:

🏠 Colour-matched: I choose shades that align with interior paint brands so your art feels like it "breathes" with your decor.

🌿 Built to last: Every piece is crafted with durability in mind.

🖌️ Your story, your way: From ready-to-shop prints to bespoke commissions, I love creating art that reflects your individuality.

The name South Island Art has several meanings. I like that it suggests travel, and my heritage is Sri Lankan - a southern island in the Indian Ocean.

I founded South Island Art in 2016 to record my travel experiences. This year, I'm excited to celebrate 10 years in business with lots of treats and new pieces!

I love swapping stories about places - hearing your tips on where to go and what to do.

🌄 One of my favourite recent holidays was to the Canary Islands - full of fantastic food and seeing these incredible, otherworldly landscapes.

I would love to know the last place you visited?

Greenwich Park, London. This piece is one of my personal favourites from my collection and popular with many of my collectors too 🌸

🎨 At events, visitors often say they’re drawn in by the colours - the palette of gentle yellows and fresh, spring greens has this instant warm and soothing effect.

My Greenwich Park print was inspired by Spring morning strolls in the park. Trees full of blossom, the colours and scents of daffodils and hyacinths and primroses in planted areas of the park, dappled sunlight weaving its way through branches, the city laid out before you.

🖼️ You can purchase this limited-edition fine-art print in two panoramic sizes (24x12 inches or 16x8 inches) - this format really captures that iconic London vista from the top of the hill.

Over Christmas, we were lucky to have another trip to Brockholes nature reserve in Lancashire. Once an old sand and gravel quarry, it is now this incredible wildlife haven.

🐦 Coming here is like walking into a magical storybook from childhood. Our first visit in Spring was filled with the sound of birdsong echoing and carpets of bluebells in the ancient woodland, and a winter visit was just as enchanting.

During our winter visit, we had a gorgeous blue sky day with just a couple of wispy clouds here and there. We saw herons on the lakes, spotted a couple of roe deer as well as seeing buzzards soaring and hovering above the trees. And returning to the ancient woodland, it was SO busy with birds and a squirrel where food had been left out for wildlife. There were nuthatches, loads of coal t**s and great t**s and a couple of robins. I could have stood there watching forever!

Brockholes was the inspiration behind my ‘The Sound of Birdsong’ piece, available as a limited-edition fine-art print as well as a greetings card. I wanted to capture a sense of escaping into a tranquil, peaceful world, surrounded by wildlife.

🛍️ Shop the "The Sound of Birdsong" on my website (link in bio ).

Create a space where your stories come alive with a commission made just for you and tailored to your style.

🌏 I’ve worked with clients across the world, from the USA to Australia and in between. Together, we've created pieces that remind my clients of homes and everyday escapes, to bucket-list experiences. We’ve captured memories to celebrate milestone moments from birthdays and anniversaries to weddings and surprised and delighted parents at Christmas. Each piece is filled with thoughtfulness, personality and unexpected touches - something that truly reflects them.

🖼️ Swipe to see a selection of places held close to my clients' hearts. Each one celebrates a different story, from childhood homes to honeymoons to solo road trips.

Each piece began with a really informal conversation, with my lovely clients contacting me via Instagram messages, in-person chats at events or email.⁣

My process is seamless from start to finish, with 4 simple steps over two stages. Email updates keep you informed every step of the way.

Stage 1: Creating your concept

🌟 Step 1 - Your Memories: Whether you have an idea in mind or want to explore options, we have an informal chat over phone or email.

🌟 Step 2 - Bringing your memories to life: I sketch, make moodboards, draw and refine. When your illustration is ready, I send you a mini-printed proof in the post (as well as email) for peace of mind, giving you a true feel for how your final piece will look.

This step takes 2-3 weeks.

Stage 2: Final Artwork creation

🌟Step 3: Any adjustments are made to your initial proof.

🌟Step 4 - Your bespoke piece of art: When you're happy with your proof, your personality-packed art piece is produced and delivered!

This stage is about 2 weeks for UK deliveries and 3 weeks for international.

I’m currently open for commissions. To find out more about commissioning a unique piece of art, send me a DM, email me or visit my website - all links are in my profile

🐦 Big Garden Birdwatch

Did you join for their annual Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend?

The world’s largest garden wildlife survey took just one hour of observing and recording the birds you see in your patch - whether from your garden, balcony or local park.

We didn’t have as many visitors during the hour I watched as last year, but I did manage to see a couple of Great T**s, a Blackcap and of course, the Robin that seems to have claimed our garden as its territory!

What birds did you see?

🍃Birds & Blooms

Watching the wildlife in our garden was the main inspiration behind my Birds & Blooms collection, available as a magnet as well as greetings cards. There is a card set in each season, with birds and florals that echo what we can see in our gardens and parks.

🛍️Shop the Collection

Head to my website (link in bio ) to browse the Birds & Blooms collection. You can purchase individual cards as well as creating your own set by adding 5 cards to your shopping cart.
