Olive sat in every bath and tested every tap so you don’t have to.

Honestly? This is one of our favourite parts of the job.

Most people choose a bath from a brochure or a website. It looks beautiful, they order it, and then they live with it — sometimes for decades.

We’d rather climb in fully clothed in a showroom and look slightly ridiculous, than have a client realise six months later that their dream bath is actually uncomfortable. And here’s Olive doing just that!

A bath can be the most beautiful object in a room and still feel completely wrong to use. Too shallow. Too short. Too cold too quickly. The rim in the wrong place. The taps positioned so you can never quite stretch out properly.

None of that shows up in a photograph.

So we visit. We test. We ask the questions that don’t make it onto the spec sheet — and we find the one that’s genuinely right for you, your body, your bathroom, and the way you actually live.

That’s the difference between a bathroom that looks good and one that feels extraordinary every single morning.

We're delighted to share that our interior redesign of the accommodation at Each Hospices in Milton, Cambridgeshire has been shortlisted for a BIID interior design award.

We're so pleased the project has been recognised and all thanks to the generous help of the design community who donated so much of their time and most of the furniture and fixtures used in the project

✨ How to choose the right sofa ✨ Choosing the right sofa is about far more than simply picking a style you like. The best sofas work with the scale of the room, the way you live, and how you want the space to feel every day.

From the shape and cushion filling to skirted details, exposed legs and fabric choice, every decision plays a part in creating a piece that feels both comfortable and timeless.

One of the most important details is often the most overlooked, making sure it actually fits through the front door!

We always believe a well-designed sofa should feel effortless in a room, practical, comfortable, and perfectly at home within the wider scheme.

We’ve shared more of our thoughts on choosing the right sofa (and avoiding costly mistakes) in our latest article.

✨ Before and after sitting room ✨ In this sitting room, the starting point already had beautiful bones, warm walls, generous proportions and lovely natural light. The update was really about adding personality and a stronger sense of balance throughout the scheme.

The custom made sofa and layered cushions brought in a mix of pattern and colour without making the room feel busy, while the deeper trims and textured fabrics added warmth and contrast against the neutral backdrop.

Even the window area became more connected to the rest of the room with the addition of upholstery and fuller curtains framing the space properly.

It now feels calmer, more inviting and far more reflective of the people living there, comfortable enough for everyday use, but still full of character.

How we bring balance to colour in a room…

We tend to think of colour in layers. Starting with a softer, grounding base, then building in contrast and interest through upholstery, joinery and curtains, before finishing with those smaller details that bring everything to life.

It’s a considered approach. When it’s balanced well, nothing feels too much or too little. The room just feels calm, cohesive and easy to be in.

Good colour choices aren’t about being bold nor does one have to be too restrained, it’s about getting the balance right.

✨ House Tour ✨ “Crumbling Splendour” was how the owner described it when they fell for what was then a run down Grade I listed house and ruins. Working with their architects to reconfigure the layout, this characterful Cistercian Abbey was subsequently brought back to life as a vibrant family home.

From the outside the beautiful flint façade and soft landscaping set the tone of a classic english country home.

This is one of those homes that feels full of character the moment you step inside.

Inside, it’s all about layering. Pattern on pattern, colour used with confidence and pieces that feel as though they’ve been collected over time rather than placed all at once.

The arched windows and window seat create such a lovely moment of symmetry, softened with rich reds and warm yellows that catch the light so beautifully.

In the bedrooms, there’s a gentler rhythm, botanical prints, soft blues and warm neutrals thoughtfully put together so it feels calm but still full of interest.

And then into the heart of the home, where the colourful joinery sits so comfortably with the lighting, fabrics and ceramics. It’s a balance that we at Kelling like to bring to all our projects, traditional at the core, but never predictable.

Every room feels lived in yet considered, the kind of home that doesn’t try too hard but gets everything just right.

We were pleased to see Emma featured in Business and Interiors Designers Journal speaking about diversifying in interior design with the growth of Kelling Designs, KellingHome and Kelling Staging

Whether it’s a full interior design project or a staged property, the approach remains the same: thoughtful layering, beautiful detail, original artwork, and rooms that feel collected over time rather than simply decorated. The end result is always creating homes that feel personal, characterful and genuinely lived in.

A lovely piece to be part of, alongside fellow designers Salvesen Graham and Celine Interior Design and a nice moment to reflect on how far the business has grown over the years.
