This week on Diary of a Designer, I’m taking you behind the scenes of the first day of install at Project Ham House.

Day one is always the most hectic and the most chaotic, but slowly, piece by piece, the house starts to look like a home. This is the reality of pulling a large-scale interior design project together, where months (sometimes years) of work finally become tangible.

This is the bit I love. Seeing all those tiny decisions come together, watching a completely empty room slowly find its soul, and experiencing that rather brilliant moment when you can finally see the vision come to life.

It’s messy. It’s exciting. It’s absolutely never as smooth as the final portfolio shots would have you believe.

I hope you love seeing this side of my world as much as I love sharing it.

Go and watch the full episode on the House Nine YouTube channel and let me know what you think!

Panelling is not a trend - it’s one of the oldest tricks in the interiors book… and still one of the most powerful.

If you’ve ever walked into a room and thought “why does this feel so expensive?”… chances are, it’s the panelling. We use panelling in every single one of our projects, but here’s the thing: the style we choose changes completely depending on the age of the property, the room’s proportions, and the mood we’re creating. It’s never one-size-fits-all.
This series is your Panelling 101 - in Parts 2 & 3 I’ll break down which styles to use where so you can get it right.

Save this one. You’re going to want to come back to it.
And drop your questions below - what room are you thinking of panelling?

In the hot seat for a quick-fire round of interior design Qs.

My thoughts on open shelving, joinery cut-outs, what I’d never skimp on in a kitchen, the one thing clients ask for that I gently (but firmly) talk them out of (hint: it glows), timeless splashbacks, mixing metals, and my go-to alternative to downlights.

Now, if you’d like to turn up the heat on this hot seat, drop your questions in the comments below and I’ll answer them in a future video.

The boot room scullery or ‘bootility’ at Project Dublin. The humble backbone of the home, where the dirt meets the clean.

A room built for chaos deserves a calm backdrop. A row of brass wall lights repeat overhead, Zellige tiles bring their soft, irregular charm, and grounding, dark stone underfoot takes whatever the day tracks in.

If interiors are your thing, follow my studio account House Nine Design Studio for pure, unadulterated H9 project imagery. It’s just good for the soul.

Winter months at the House Nine studio are always a total whirlwind - pre-Christmas installs, tight deadlines and just the mild whiff of panic. So a little daily indulgence for my hard working team courtesy of feels very well deserved.

Their new townhouse-inspired advent calendar is filled with all the old favourites - Winter, Seychelles, Sea Salt, Lime & Bay, Pomegranate and Spa Restore - alongside the new Herbal Wild Mint collection, with seven full-sized products tucked inside its doors. And yes, there’s a drawer for Christmas Day too. As there blooming well should be - that one’s for all the exhausted mothers.

And when it’s empty, the box is far too good to simply recycle. Mine’s being handed to my girls with a box of colouring pens and a firm instruction to stay busy.

But no more spoilers for now. The rest of the doors stay closed until December. No peeking. I’ll know… 👀

A little literary interrogation at Daunt Books Holland Park 📚

From books that gave me goosebumps, to the book club read I abandoned after 10 pages (sorry Jilly, I do remember finding it all very thrilling at 16!), to the book I think everyone should read… and, naturally, the best coffee table book being No Place Like Home.

So if your reading list is looking a little sad, I hope there is something in here to whet your literary whistle. And if you’re after something beautiful enough to live on the coffee table but also packed with guidance from 20 years experience creating timeless, authentic, deeply liveable homes… I know a book 😉

What are you all devouring at the moment? I need my next read!

The YouTube is BACK.

Episode one of our three-part Project Ham House series has just landed on the House Nine YouTube channel, and I’m taking you right back to the beginning of this very special project.

Ham House is a 9,900-square-foot, six-bedroom home in Richmond, spread across three floors, with a pool, gym, expansive entertaining spaces and a rather glorious primary suite. Built in 1915 and largely untouched since the 1990s, the home was very much ready for a little House Nine intervention.

In this first episode, you’ll meet our wonderful clients, Nicola and Dan, see the house in all its pre-renovation glory and get inside the brief that shaped everything that followed. We talk about how they wanted the house to feel, how we approached a project of this scale, and the vision we had for bringing this old girl into the modern world without losing what made her special in the first place.

This is just the start. Three episodes documenting this enormous renovation. Go and watch part one on the House Nine YouTube channel - then come straight back here and tell me your thoughts.

Swipe for a little before-and-after action from this wallpapered wonder of a guest bedroom at Project Ham House.

I know many of you have been missing the YouTube episodes, so I’m very happy to report that we are finally dusting the cobwebs off the channel to bring you the Project Ham House renovation series, with part one coming later this week.

This is the largest house we’ve taken on at House Nine to date. Six bedrooms in Richmond, built in 1915, last refurbished in 1996, and it showed. Pink and blue carpets, orange pine as far as the eye could see, a primary ensuite complete with bidet and step-up whirlpool bath bath, and swag curtains swathing every single window. Quite the starting point.

Our wonderful clients were very clear in their brief: this was not going to be a museum. They wanted homey, lived-in, soft, functional. Nothing austere. They also love colour and pattern, and gave us full permission to push the boat out - a symphony to a designer’s ears.

Over the series, I’ll be taking you through the whole renovation - the good, the bad, the dusty, the decisions and, ultimately, how we breathed new life into this old girl while keeping all the character that made our clients fall for her in the first place.

I am SO excited for you to watch this one. Subscribe to the House Nine Design Studio YouTube channel so you are notified the moment part one lands.

Nothing says autumn in my house quite like a lasagna. I like to think of it as entering my rich food and red wine era. Really, it’s just any excuse to light every candle in the cottage and get friends round the table.

Much like ourselves, our homes need to change with the seasons too - a bit more of that layering you know I love, a warmer palette, deeper textures, and something bubbling away that smells like the whole season in one dish. A few last-of-the-summer stems from the local florist go in the bud vases, some gourds to garnish the napkins, and the whole place just starts to feel... in on the season.

Accessorising is the cheat code for this. You don’t need a renovation, just a few good pieces you actually love. I always choose organic shapes over anything too perfect - a scalloped bowl, a seagrass oven dish, the kind of thing a lasagna looks properly at home in. Choose quality, timeless pieces from and you’re not decorating for one season, you’re building a collection you’ll pull out year after year. Buy it once, love it forever, no second-guessing come September.

A few small swaps, a little more layering, and the room turns beautifully autumnal. Proof that refreshing a space doesn’t take a renovation, just a willingness to let it evolve - and maybe a second helping!
