A story about friendship and the fun things we get up to… my friend Emily had a bag of dried feusag-liath (old man’s beard) lichen in her garage ready to dye some yarn 🧶 and asked if I might be interested in having some when it was done. Well, of course I couldn’t resist! Dyed in Nova Scotia, travelled to Scotland, knitted in Edinburgh and finished south of the border. The first pattern I tried left me frustrated, as even though I had worked this pattern several times before, it just didn’t feel right, so went for a simple structural patten with eyelet detail. Rather pleased with it. Mòran taing, E. x

4 Research based reasons to teach your child to knit:

1. Improved self-control.
A 2023 study asked elementary school children to complete inhibition-control tasks after a short knitting session. Researchers found the knitting group performed better on both emotional and non emotional self regulation tasks compared to the control group.

2.Better attention & focus.
A 2025 study found that participants performed better on attention tests after just 20 minutes of crochet. Researchers also observed changes in brain networks linked to attention.

3.Stronger learning skills.
Knitting combines counting, sequencing, pattern recognition, reading instructions, and problem solving all within one activity, which is why fiber crafts are often discussed in hands on education research.

4.Supports motor coordination.
Knitting requires sustained hand movement, visual tracking, coordination, and concentration at the same time. Developmental research has consistently linked fine motor development with broader cognitive development in children.

Sometimes it feels too much to concentrate on a lace pattern at the end of the day, and after all, knitting is supposed to be an enjoyable pastime! I have knitted the pattern I have been trying to focus on several times before, but despite stitch markers I am about to unravel this for the fourth time. I have another pattern lined up. Wish me luck… 🍀

March Meet the Maker - design details - have you ever looked at the work put into a handknitted sock? Those stitches are tiny, and need to be even and neat to help make a sock which will last for years. I made this photo journal of socks made for a friend, when she was going through chemo and really felt the cold. Yes, it is a plain pattern, but the yarn is pretty fabulous (from my fave indie dyer who isn’t dyeing yarn any more 😢) but thousands of tiny stitches make up a pair of socks knitted with love. Maybe it will make some people think twice about laughing and saying to a knitter, you know that you can buy socks in the supermarket, right? 🏳️‍⚧️

Please don't ask ChatGPT to write a sock pattern for you.

It won't do it by magic.

What it will do is just scrape the pattern instructions (one might almost say steal) from 1000s of free patterns already uploaded to the web by your local, friendly pattern designers.

You could just cut out the middle man and go directly to said designers. I promise we don't bite.

And we will happily direct you to free patterns - that will actually work.

Don’t let anyone tell you that handmade is cheap… 🤣

Hand-dyed yarn, spun from quality yarn, ethically kept and shorn sheep, family farm, so keeping a small business trading. £12 for 100g of DK yarn is pretty reasonable. Not all yarn is equal, and yes, I know I could buy 100g of acrylic yarn for around £2. But I rarely enjoy knitting with it, and real wool is sustainable.

Knitting a hat in a stitch that will accommodate a range of head sizes, because rib is stretchy, and there will probably be enough for wrist warmers too.

The problem then is pricing to sell. I struggled to sell beanie hats for £3 to £5 (depending on size/yarn) at the last fundraiser, and that didn’t cover the cost of the yarn, let alone any of my time.

So, as folks are telling me they want unique, handmade items, made with quality yarn, what is the reason they delight in telling me that they can get the ‘same’ (which they cannot) in Primark or other stores, for less. And then don’t buy the items that they tell me are lovely and just what they need but… Have tried fairs where I have paid £££ for a stall, and found the same, so it is not just the myth that sellers in church will be cheap, and I am clearly not ripping anyone off. I dare not calculate how much I would charge if I added the number of knitting hours even at minimum wage, for a hat!

At least I enjoy the process of knitting. And this yarn is pretty, right?! 😊

I have a lovely cashmere jumper which doesn’t get worn as much as it would if it was a cardigan, so going to bravely make it into a cardigan, and this Liberty bias binding will help me secure and neaten the edges.

Ooof! Gifted some yarn and suspected some had been used for another project by the size and weight of the ball, but weighed a complete sock and guessed that their should be enough, but it would be tight. Less than 1g of yarn left over and one pair of men’s socks done. Phew!
