SCP was founded in 1985 by Sheridan Coakley as a manufacturer and retailer of modern furniture. Inspired by the designs of the Modern Movement, Coakley decided to start selling classic and hard to find pieces and also try his hand a producing new designs in the same spirit. Nearly three decades on, SCP remains true to its founding idea, to make and sell design products that are functional, beautif

ul and made to last. In 1986, SCP exhibited for the first time at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. On show were the first ever manufactured designs by Matthew Hilton and Jasper Morrison. The event established SCP as a pioneering force in the UK and international furniture industry. Since those early heady days of creative entrepreneurialism, SCP has continued to develop new products every year. Employing the rich talents of designers that include Terence Woodgate, Konstantin Grcic, Michael Marriott, Russell Pinch, Robin Day, Donna Wilson, Alex Hellum, Kay+Stemmer, Reiko Kaneko, Lucy Kurrein, Timorous Beasties, PearsonLloyd, Rachel Whiteread and Peter Marigold. Today, SCP is firmly established as one of the UK’s most innovative and internationally respected manufacturers and suppliers of contemporary design. SCP is also an acclaimed and award winning retailer, regularly voted as one of London’s finest design shops.

Sharing its iconic frame with the Classic series, Bovik maintains a strong connection to the brand’s design heritage while introducing a lighter and more contemporary expression through slimmer wooden profiles and an elegant eleven-slat backrest. Following the incredible campaign work by Delyth Fetherston-Dilke, highlighting the growing concern surrounding upholstery regulations in the UK, SCP would like to shed some light on our own upholstery ranges.

Our upholstery collection is free from foam and fire retardants. Foam, being petrochemical based, is the key unsustainable material in modern upholstery, and at SCP we believe it has to be removed from products to ensure they are truly sustainable. To ensure a sustainable product, SCP uses a range of natural materials in the upholstery process as a replacement for foam. Utilising alternatives including rubberised coconut fibre, engineered wools, natural latex and feathers. Fire retardant chemicals off-gas VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) into the environments they exist in, both in their time retained in furniture and fabrics, and during the process of their disposal. By removing them we can improve the well-being of our customers, our staff and the world we live in.

As we prepare to leave Curtain Road, we’re taking a moment to look back at where it all began in 1985.

The story of how SCP was founded in Shoreditch is one of pragmatism, a little imagination, and a fortuitous dose of happenstance.

SCP founder Sheridan Coakley was a regular visitor to Shoreditch in the early 1980s, due to the fact that some vestiges of the furniture industry, which had been the mainstay of the area since the late 19th century, were still present.

At the time, Coakley was trading in early 20th century furniture from the modernist movement from a small shop on Westbourne Grove. He had started to re-issue under license a small number of Pel designs, under the pre-SCP titled SC Products brand.

Resort by Ted Synnott for SCP is a design that explores the boundaries of strength in a simple rationalised construction.

The design nests two folded sheets of steel perpendicularly, which are then laser-welded together, to create a single strong form. The construction method creates a useful shelf below the top, ideal for books and other small household items. Resort is a design that appears almost effortless, ideal for both indoor and outdoor environments, made from powder-coated mild steel.
