Specialising in contemporary residential and commercial work, Crawford Partnership Ltd was established in 1997 as a design led architectural and interior design practice. Since then we have grown into a 10 strong team of Architects, Interior designers and technicians and are currently located in our own purpose build offices in North London developed by the practice. We enjoy a rich variety of wor

k ranging from domestic residential extensions and new builds, to basement construction, hotels, apartments, developments and schools. Our projects are driven by a clear and concise design philosophy that is concerned with maximising development opportunities while creating unique interesting spaces that combine dramatic materials and exploiting natural light wherever possible. All of our work is driven by a strong emphasis on sustainability, from the materials we specify and the renewable technologies employed, to the energy efficient design and methods of prefabricated construction. We believe a sustainable approach to the design is vital from the outset of the process from conception and throughout the project life. Our growing business has also been widely recognised in the Architectural and Business press over the past few years winning awards ranging from Interior Design and Bathroom design being labelled by WALLPAPER* magazine, as ‘one of 101 of the worlds most exciting new architects. HOW WE NEED TO EXPERIENCE NOT JUST BUILDINGS, BUT LIFE, WITH ALL OUR SENSES.

Last year, I reviewed Juhani Pallasmaa’s The Eyes of the Skin for our Reading Room web page — a book that keeps reminding the built environment professions that architecture isn’t something we only look at, but something we inhabit with the whole body: sound, touch, atmosphere, rhythm, memory.

A happy (and slightly surreal) sequel followed: I was invited to the audiobook launch at Solus’ Clerkenwell showroom in February this year, and only later discovered that a short clip of my own comments made it into the final promotional film. You really don’t know where a “hobby” like book reviewing might lead.

Thank you to Sam Frith at Solus for the invitation and warm welcome, and huge credit to Juhani Pallasmaa, all the speakers and host, Plummb for the music, the excellent caterers, and Superbeam for the film-making.

We hope this message finds everyone well and filled with festive cheer as we fast approach Christmas!

As we reach the end of 2025, we at Crawford Partnership are taking a moment to reflect on a year defined by resilience and gratitude. While the construction and design sectors faced a "perfect storm" of economic headwinds this year, we chose not to view the slowdown as a stop, but as a call for innovation and rigorous management.

We are incredibly proud that, despite the "freeze," our team remained focused on delivery and unlocking value in even the most challenging sites.

This year, our work addressing the housing crisis remained the moral anchor of our practice. We continued our vital collaboration with partners like the youth homelessness charity, CentrePoint, championing the belief that high-quality architecture is a necessity, not a luxury. Simultaneously, 2025 marked a deepening of our digital transformation, as we moved our integration of Artificial Intelligence from experimentation to implementation to sharpen our architectural eye.

To celebrate these achievements—from award nominations to our "AI Lab" experiments—please click the link below to explore our festive Annual Review 2025.

As we approach the holiday season, Maria and I wish you a restful Christmas and a prosperous, dynamic New Year. May this festive season bring you good health, happiness, and plenty of reasons to smile. We hope to see you soon.

✨ When Buildings Sing with the Earth ✨

GEOMANCY

From ley lines to frozen music, Geomancy (Wooden Books) uncovers the hidden energies shaping our landscapes and architecture.

In our latest Reading Room review, I explore how ancient practices of orientation, proportion, and harmony resonate with today’s biophilic design, wellness architecture, and even our own Cecile Park project featured in ABB’s Frozen Music series.

🌍 What if the buildings we create could truly attune to the pulse of the Earth?

✨ We’re delighted to share that our project at 412a Muswell Hill Broadway has been shortlisted as a Finalist in the SBID International Design Awards 2025! ✨

This nomination recognises the transformation of a tired, former Woolworths store into a vibrant, mixed-use development — bringing together retail on the ground floor with thoughtfully designed new homes above. It’s a story of adaptive reuse: respecting the fabric of the high street while re-imagining its future.

What makes this project special is not just the architecture, but the collaboration. From the very first sketches through to the realities of planning, construction, and delivery, this was a process involving multiple voices, a few inevitable dramas, and a shared determination to breathe new life into a once-neglected site.

📖 For those who’d like to dive deeper into the full history and chronology of the design, our new book sets out the journey in detail, capturing the thinking, the challenges, and the solutions that shaped the project:

🎙️ If you’d rather listen in, our podcast takes you behind the scenes to hear directly about the process — the human stories, the hurdles, and the unexpected turns that define projects like this:

But above all, this is not just one project. It’s an example of what can happen when we rethink our high streets. Across the UK, we’re surrounded by underused buildings and fading shopfronts. With imagination, investment, and collaboration, they can become part of the solution to some of our biggest challenges: housing shortages, high street decline, and the need for more resilient urban spaces.

And this is where we’d love your support. The public vote for the SBID Awards is now open, and every vote helps highlight the value of adaptive reuse as a way forward for towns and cities everywhere.

🗳️ Voting closes on 5th September 2025. If our work resonates with you, we’d be hugely grateful for your support:

🎉 We’re delighted (and honestly a bit surprised!) to share that Crawford Partnership has been shortlisted as a Finalist in the prestigious SBID Interior Design Awards 2025! 🎉

Our Muswell Hill Broadway project transformed a tired Woolworths into 7 stylish apartments over a new Aldi supermarket — all on a tight budget. It’s been a real team effort and a true labour of love.

Now, the public vote is open! If you can spare a moment, please visit the “Residential Budget Up To £50,000 – UK” category and vote for us:

Voting is a fantastic way to celebrate the amazing collaboration behind this project — from our client Imrose Properties, the main contractor ChampionBuild, and many subcontractors, to the consultants, all suppliers, and the professional photographer Adam Butler Photography.

A special shoutout to Maria Crawford for bringing the interiors to life with her modelling, adding that perfect human scale and warmth to our images. 🥰

Thanks so much for your support — every vote counts!

In a world of AI-authored content, speed-listening apps, and 12-minute book summaries, what happens to the joy of reading deeply — and slowly?

We've just published a new piece on our website exploring the enduring role of books in architectural thinking, and why The Reading Room exists as a space for reflection in an accelerating digital world.

From clay tablets to Kindle, from the libraries of Alexandria to algorithm-generated bestsellers — we trace the long arc of how (and why) we read, and what it means for designers today.

Have a read. Let it linger. Then tell us what you’ve been reading lately.

Yellow Kitchen Sequel — A Vision of the future of Kitchen Design

One year ago, we shared an experimental AI-generated video that Alan produced imagining the future of kitchen design through the lens of colour, form, and emotion.

This updated sequel represents not only the evolution of those ideas, but the leap in what’s possible with AI platforms today, and our growing experiences using these AI platforms.

Using a blend of MidJourney (for imagery), Kling 1.6 Pro (for motion), Topaz AI (for quality enhancement), Clipchamp (for editing), and Udio AI (for music), this 2-minute video brings together Alan's passion for architecture and interior design, the optimism of yellow, and a nod to Mondrian’s geometry in both space and dress.

It’s a playful yet serious exploration: What progress will kitchen design (and film making) follow in the future?

We are keen to connect with others working at the intersection of design, technology, and storytelling.

Curious to hear your thoughts.
