Furl Furl | Experts in creating space How Furl made a start | David Norman, Founder

I’m interested in creating space for people. Or even just the room to think.

Giving them room to do more, or completely relax. I made my first piece of furniture for my family because no one else made exactly what I wanted. It was a space-efficient storage bed. I wanted a thoughtful design, with robust build quality, creating loads of extra room. It took me a while to get it just right. Then I made another. The friend who bought it asked me to make another. So I did. Then she recommended it to her friend. So I made another bed for them. Nowadays, we create space for people in many different ways. But our mission remains the same. Furl helps you to do more, with less. furl.co.uk

Five sizes. One bed.

Every Furl sofa bed is 200cm long on an 18cm mattress, whatever the width. Most sofa beds get thinner as they get smaller — ours don't. A single is built to the same specification as a super king.

So the only real decision is how wide:

Single — 80 × 200cm
Small double — 115 × 200cm
Double — 140 × 200cm
King — 160 × 200cm
Super king — 180 × 200cm

Yes, a sofa bed goes up to super king. Most people don't know that, which is why they end up with a double they outgrow.

Pick the width by the room, not the guest list: work out the widest bed the open floor will take, then go one size down so you can still walk round it.

Save this before you choose a size.

"You'll need a hand with that."

You won't.

That's a child opening one of our sofa beds on her own, start to finish, and then going to sleep on it.

A mechanism that needs two adults and an argument isn't a good mechanism. Ours doesn't.

18cm. This is what a sofa bed mattress should look like.

Everything else — the frame, the fabric, the mechanism — is there to hold up something you'd actually want to sleep on. Most sofa beds don't have one. Ours goes up to 18cm, properly sprung, with no bar through the middle.

Here's a grown man face down on one. Out cold, mouth open, entirely unbothered.

You don't sleep like that on something you're merely tolerating.

Our best-selling sofa bed, and it isn't close.

Cambio opens out to a proper bed — generous proportions, up to super king, on a mattress up to 18cm deep. About as deep as a sofa bed mattress gets. Four mattresses to choose from, so you pick the feel rather than put up with one.

Fold it away and it's a comfortable sofa again. You'll enjoy every day of it.

From £1,775. Live with it for 60 days — love it or return it.

Come and lie on one: NW6 or the King's Road.

The sofa fits. The bed doesn't.

It's the most common way a sofa bed goes wrong, and it happens at the measuring stage, months before anything arrives.

Five things to check:

210cm of clear floor for the opening. Most of ours open to 205cm.
40cm between the sofa and the coffee table.
30cm at the side, so you can actually reach the mechanism.
A door taller than the mattress is wide — the folded mechanism is the biggest single part, and it's exactly that width.
The route in. Stairwells, turns, and the things nobody writes down: radiators, picture frames, light fittings.

Then tape the footprint on the floor, closed and open, and live with it for a day before you order anything.

Save this for when you're measuring.

£1,295 for a coffee table?

Sounds ridiculous…
until it quietly turns into a dining table for six.

Small space logic.

One table. Two lives.
