Hackney Bloom

TEXTILE EXHIBITION
OPEN CALL

This Hackney-funded textile and floral exhibition brings together artists and local residents, celebrating local creativity, connection, and community.

We welcome applications from artists, students, designers, makers, and anyone interested in creating with yarn. You do not need to identify as a textile artist or have professional experience to apply.

All yarn-based, mixed-media, and experimental approaches are welcome. Selected participants will create a new work specifically for the exhibition.

With cheekyarn as the main supporter, selected participants will receive loop 8 yarn to incorporate into their work.

A bloom is not simply a moment of birth. A seed set in the ground does not open by itself. It needs soil to hold it, sunlight, water, wind, and enough time. A flower blooms only when separate things meet and connect.

What comes to mind when you see a flower in full bloom?
Hackney is much the same. The residents, communities, businesses, and makers here each hold their own shape and their own story. When they come together, the conditions for a new bloom begin to form. Hackney Bloom reads this process of meeting and growth as a flower coming into bloom.

Each work is a single flower. On its own, it carries one meaning. Gathered with others, it takes on the fullness that only a garden can hold. The artists’ voices sit alongside one another without competing, and the landscape is richer for it.

through Tufting

Cheeky Studio is inviting Hackney residents to join us for a special tufting workshop, supported by Hackney Council.

No tufting experience is needed! Whether it’s a place, memory, object, colour or feeling that reminds you of Hackney, you’ll have the chance to turn your idea into a tufted artwork with us.

All 10 artworks created during the workshops will be featured in our upcoming exhibition in September. After the exhibition, each piece will be returned to its maker.

This isn’t your average tufting session. 🎨

Our Artistic Rug class is for going deeper — full design development, mixed pile heights, sculpted texture, real creative freedom. This piece started as a hand-drawn colour study, then came to life with s**g, loop, and cut pile all working together to build depth most rugs just don’t have.

If you’ve already tufted and want to push further, or you’re a designer/artist looking to translate your work into texture, this one’s for you.
