One Thread, Many Hands: Worship Street

Tufting Workshop

Join Cheeky Studio at Shoreditch Sandbox for a hands-on textile experience where you’ll help create a collaborative wall-hanging inspired by the history of Worship Street 

Create alongside other makers to bring the custom artwork to life. Led by East End based tufting design studio Cheeky Studio, you’ll take turns in pairs using tufting guns to create sections of the piece, with each pair adding their own colour and mark.

Worship Street
The artwork is part of First Threads, Shoreditch Sandbox’s launch season exploring the area’s long history of making and creativity. Its design follows a single, unbroken thread across the canvas, changing shape and colour as it travels through time - from Worship Street’s open fields and historic foundries to merchant tailors, Philip Webb’s 1861 craft terraces and local factories.

HACKNEY BLOOM 2026
Hackney Bloom is a community-led exhibition celebrating creativity, connection and growth across Hackney.

Each artwork brings a different voice to a shared garden, shaped together by artists, local residents and creative partners.

Presented by Cheeky Studio® × Roha Flower | London Florist, the exhibition brings together textile artworks, floral installations, and pieces created by Hackney residents through our workshops.

With support from cheekyarn, participating artists have been able to create artworks using supported recycled yarn.

Our partner Sonic Tonics is providing the exhibition space, where visitors can also enjoy drinks brewed locally in Hackney.

For the opening night, JAPONICA will provide Japanese-style bakery treats for the first 100 guests.

Brief arrived on a Wednesday with a deadline of the 8th. Tight, but doable if we started immediately.

The logo was straightforward. The shape was not. Archie came back the same evening asking for the outline to follow the letterforms rather than sit in a rectangle, which meant cutting the whole silhouette by hand once the tufting was done.

Then the carving. Every letter edge worked back by hand so the black sits proud of the white and the curves read as curves rather than steps. That is the part you cannot rush and cannot fake. It is also the part that makes the whole thing look inflated, like the letters are holding their breath.

This Hackney-funded textile and floral exhibition brings together artists and local residents, celebrating local creativity, connection, and community.

We welcome applications from artists, students, designers, makers, and anyone interested in creating with yarn. You do not need to identify as a textile artist or have professional experience to apply.

All yarn-based, mixed-media, and experimental approaches are welcome. Selected participants will create a new work specifically for the exhibition.

With cheekyarn as the main supporter, selected participants will receive loop 8 yarn to incorporate into their work.

A bloom is not simply a moment of birth. A seed set in the ground does not open by itself. It needs soil to hold it, sunlight, water, wind, and enough time. A flower blooms only when separate things meet and connect.

What comes to mind when you see a flower in full bloom?
Hackney is much the same. The residents, communities, businesses, and makers here each hold their own shape and their own story. When they come together, the conditions for a new bloom begin to form. Hackney Bloom reads this process of meeting and growth as a flower coming into bloom.

Each work is a single flower. On its own, it carries one meaning. Gathered with others, it takes on the fullness that only a garden can hold. The artists’ voices sit alongside one another without competing, and the landscape is richer for it.

This is not the work of the artists alone. It is a bloom made with partners, part
