A Unique Celebration of Ballet
And finally, the finished piece.
A hand-finished mother-of-pearl shell bowl supported by silver-plated dancers, created specially for the Royal Ballet School’s Centenary Gala and inspired by the movement and elegance of Sir Frederick Ashton’s Rhapsody.
We are incredibly proud to have created and donated this one-of-a-kind piece, and delighted that it will now form part of the Royal Ballet School’s Centenary celebrations. A celebration of the artistry, heritage and enduring beauty of ballet.
Now it is ready for its next chapter with its lucky collector.

The Art Is in the Detail
Once the dancers had been cast, each figure was carefully cleaned, refined and detailed by hand before receiving its final silver-plated finish.
Every contour and detail matters when translating a hand-carved wax figure into metal. The aim was to retain the sense of movement and expression captured in the original sculpture inspired by Sir Frederick Ashton’s Rhapsody.

From Wax to Silver

There are many stages between the first hand-sculpted wax figure and the finished dancer.

Following casting, each figure is carefully cleaned, refined and detailed by hand, with the surface and finer details brought back to life before the final silver plating.

It is a painstaking process, but these stages are what transform the original sculpture into a finished piece, preserving the character and detail of the hand-worked wax.

. The Art of the Detail

A closer look at the finished dancers and the craftsmanship that goes into each figure.

From the curve of an arm to the position of a foot, every detail contributes to the character of the sculpture. The silver finish then catches the light across the figures, highlighting the contours and giving them an almost fluid quality.

It is these small details that bring the dancers to life and make the finished bowl feel like more than simply a functional object.

Inspired by Rhapsody

The inspiration for the dancers came from Sir Frederick Ashton’s Rhapsody, one of the great works in the Royal Ballet repertoire.

We chose a pose featuring a male and female dancer together, capturing the energy, balance and connection of the dance, and transformed that moment into a sculptural form through our own craft and interpretation.

The finished dancers bring a sense of movement and performance to the bowl, creating a piece that celebrates both ballet and the art of making.

Six Dancers, One Extraordinary Bowl

A closer look at the finished bowl and its sculptural stand.

The six silver-plated figures form the structure supporting the bowl, carefully arranged to create a balanced composition around the natural shell.

The contrast between the polished silver and the organic texture and iridescence of the shell brings together sculpture and craftsmanship in a piece designed to be as striking from every angle as it is from the front.

Capturing Movement in Silver
One of the challenges of sculpting dancers is capturing movement while retaining the delicate balance and elegance of the human form.
Inspired by Sir Frederick Ashton’s Rhapsody, the dancers were sculpted by hand in wax before being cast, refined and finished in silver.
A fleeting moment of dance transformed into a lasting sculptural piece.

Where Craftsmanship Meets Dance
Objet Luxe is honoured to present the Royal Ballet School’s Centenary Bowl. A bespoke piece created for the Royal Ballet School to celebrate its centenary, marking 100 years since its founding by Dame Ninette de Valois in 1926.

The piece brings together natural shell, sculpture and metalwork, with silver-plated dancers creating the sculptural stand for the bowl. Inspired by the movement and elegance of ballet, the dancers bring a sense of energy and performance to the piece, while the organic texture and iridescence of the shell provide a beautiful contrast to the polished silver.

Created and donated specially for the Royal Ballet School’s Centenary Gala, this unique bowl is now part of the Silent Auction in support of the school.
