Some carpets fight you every step of the way… this was definitely one of them.

8.5m × 5m, around 110kg of flatwoven carpet, paper-faced underfloor heating underlay that didn’t want to let it move, and absolutely mint burgundy skirting boards surrounding the whole lot.

So the mission was simple: get the monster in, get it positioned, stick it down… and leave everything looking exactly as it did when I arrived.

Plenty of protection, a bit of site improvisation and a LOT of working that edge by hand before feeding it behind the gripper.

One of my mentors once told me:
“If your fingers don’t hurt, you ain’t doing it right.”

After this one, I think I finally understand what he meant. 😂

Skirtings survived. Cupboards survived. Carpet’s down.

Ten fingers started the job… I’m not counting them until tomorrow. 😂

Who else has fitted one of these unforgiving flatweaves?

There are two completely different worlds in flooring… residential and commercial. 😂

Residential: take shoes off, protect everything, clean workspace, mind the walls, customer watching every step, finish at 2pm

Commercial: 7 trades in the same room, cables hanging everywhere, someone drilling above your head and you’ve been told “the area is ready for flooring.” 🤣

Different conditions, same expectation at the end — get the floor down and make it look right.

If you’ve worked in both worlds, you KNOW. 😂

Harrogate Flooring Show 2026
There’s a proper community behind this trade 👊

Every day Floor laying can be quite a lonely job. Most of the year it’s just you, your tools, the floor in front of you and whatever problems that day decides to throw at you.

Then you spend three days at a flooring show like this and realise just how big the community behind our trade actually is.

Installers, manufacturers, trainers, tool makers, people you’ve followed online for years and people you’ve never met before — all brought together by the same craft.

You talk flooring, share ideas, learn a few things, laugh at plenty of nonsense in the evening at Christies and come away with a bit more love and appreciation for what we actually do every day.

And if none of that happens… you’ll probably still leave with a new toy for the van that you absolutely convinced yourself you needed 😂🛠️

After three brilliant days, I’m genuinely grateful for all the conversations, the people I finally got to meet and everyone who took the time to come over and say hello at Refina/ Eibenstock stand

Back to working on our own floors again… but somehow feeling a little less like we’re doing it alone. 👊

Chose an 8mm underlay for this waterfall install for a little extra comfort over Durafit, but I didn’t want the edges visible from the sides.

Not that anyone would deliberately look for it — it’s just one of those details that disappears when the job is complete… which is exactly the point. 👌

You don’t see any of this once the floor is finished. 👀

Respirator on. Gloves on.

Epoxy DPM → primer → smoothing compound → finished floor.

A lot of the work we do as floor layers is designed to completely disappear. If we’ve done it properly, the customer will probably never think about it again.

And that’s exactly the point.

40 seconds of video. A lot more work underneath.

Possibly one of the most expensive protective mat I’ve ever used. 😂

Fresh carpet fitted on the landing ✅
Offcut placed down to protect it from everyone coming up the stairs ✅
Feeling very responsible and professional ✅

Checking the BACK of the offcut first… ❌🤦‍♂️

Turns out it had pencil marks on the backing — which transferred nicely onto the brand-new carpet I was trying so hard to protect.

Tried cleaning it. Nope.

So there was only one proper fix:
✂️ Cut it out
💷 £300 replacement
🚐 160-mile round trip
😐 Question several of my life choices
😂 Fit it again

An expensive lesson, but 100% customer satisfaction means 100%. If I cause it, I put it right.

So learn from this guy:

Before you put an offcut down to protect a new carpet… CHECK THE BLOODY BACK OF IT. 😂

You saw the 13-metre template… now here’s what happened when it was time to actually fit it. 👀

One long drop of Marmoleum. A 13m hallway. Very little room to work with — and plenty of places where a small mistake could become a big one.

In this one I’m showing the full process: how and why I templated it, cutting the sheet, spreading the adhesive, positioning such a long piece, fitting around the matwell frame — and finally the completed floor.

And for those who said the Marmoleum hadn’t been back-rolled enough and was definitely going to shrink… 😏
I kept the evidence.

You’ll see the cuts around the matwell on installation day, then the exact same area six weeks later.

No arguments needed. Just the result.

And the finished project? Absolutely worth all the effort.

Most trades only ever see the building site — not what they actually helped create.

We arrive when it’s dusty, noisy, unfinished and, sometimes, an absolute sh****le 😂. We do our part, pack the tools away and move on to the next job.

But coming back and seeing this place transformed into a stunning new dental surgery really made me think.

If I were a main contractor, I’d make sure every trade saw the finished project.

Because when you see how your small piece of work fits into the final picture, it gives that work a different meaning.

It’s not just flooring. Not just electrics. Not just decorating, plumbing or carpentry.

We’re all building the same finished picture.

Maybe seeing it more often would make all of us care that little bit more about the part we leave behind.
