We had these large caryatids in store for 30 years! They are carved in oak and the women are much stronger characters than the men which considering they were carved over 100 years ago says something about the original carver!

Mortlake Tapestry, English, circa 1700 representing the month of March, woven in wool

There were several sets of the months woven at Mortlake and were based on Flemish designs originally woven by Gilles de Leyniers. The scenes were based on activities taking place during the particular month.

In this tapestry a cow is being milked, butter is being churned and sheep are being driven to pasture. A series of eight was woven for Charles 1 when Prince of Wales with the Royal cipher in the borders. In the early 18th century the borders had less importance and were of narrow scale often simulating picture frames. The borders of this tapestry are typical of the later Mortlake style.

We have just completed exhibiting at the Lapada Fair in Berkeley Square which was a very good event and very well organised what is more we had quite a lot of sales although in this present political farce it is a wonder that people still want to buy anything let alone antiques but luckily there are still customers who appreciate them above all other distractions.
I still find them fascinating after 50 years in the business!

Just a reminder that we are exhibiting at the Lapada Antiques Fair in Berkeley Square 13th-18th September.
